The idea of course was that he tried to blend in and lay low, not draw attention to himself as much as possible. Very early on, I decided he would more strongly resemble Itachi than Sasuke and that he'd be a senbon user and the team medic. He was to deliberately contrast Itachi, who had not yet been revealed to be a closet pacifist, by having embraced the medical role. But, as new information came out and the concept shifted, Rinji filled a more bittersweet role to Sasuke.
