Description
Twokinds Tutorials - Digitigrade LegsLooking around Deviantart, I noticed that there weren't very many good, detailed guides on drawing characters with digitigrade legs, like those featured on my Keidran and Basitin races. Digitigrade, for those unaware, is a term for an animal that walks on their digits (toes) rather that flat-footed, as we humans do. This style of character design can be difficult for someone unused to this type of anatomical structure. Now, I am not claiming to be any sort of expert. But I have been drawing these guys for more than ten years now, and I often get asked how I draw certain things. So this is not necessarily a "how to draw" tutorial" as it is a "how I draw" tutorial, if you get my meaning.
I hope this information can prove useful for those of you who are aspiring artists, or at least interesting to those who wish to learn more about how I go about my drawing process. So without further adieu, please allow Flora to demonstrate for you how it works! Enjoy!

It's weird cause it makes a lot of sense to me. o.o I used to walk on my toes/balls of my feet when i was a kid, lol, granted i could stand straight but it effects walking a certain way, so it's easy to comprehend this.
either way, thank you for this, it is a great help :]

I am so adding this to my tutorial folder!
I just want to say that TwoKinds has been a HUGE influence for me drawing. I stumbled upon it when I was around thirteen of fourteen. I'm twenty-one now and I still LOVE the comic and check nearly every day for updates.
Your art style has really evolved and I want to be able to get my own story going when I have the time and a little more talent. Your Anthros have always been awesome to me
Okay I'm done my fan rant. Sorry ^_____^"

I've always found it hard drawing..... Well, enough said for that really. I've never tried this method before, usually I just try drawing the body without stick references, which has seemingly failed. It will be interesting trying this out. Thank you!Β
P.S. Tutorials on drawing the face would be awesome!

Awesome reference. And great comic, too. Found it by accident when looking something else. Read it in two days, then felt like my work is worthless. Really wish I could draw. I've found so many great webcomics, but I've yet to find a webserial/webfiction that comes anywhere close to that. Which leaves me wondering whether my webnovel can ever reach that level without adding some kind of visual component.
Anyway, this'll come in handy for something, whether it's illustrations for my webserial (I suck at description, so I oughta at least put some pictures in the character bios or something), or animation when I get around to that part for the video game I'm making. Thanks.

Hmmm... 10+ years experience drawing particular thing... "how I draw" guide...
Yep. We've got an official guide for a "how-to" from an expert here, folks.
(If 10 years of doing something nearly every day doesn't make you an expert, I don't know what does.)

Ah, I finaly found why my werewolf poses seems always odd...I followed many tutorials but
I never made the link about how diferent "plantigrade" and "digitgrade" foot poses are.
Begeiners make the common mistake of drawing "3 parts of leg" as we see even here then the whole
foot (like for humans) because most tutorials forget to mention that the "3rd part" actualy IS the foot
and the part what land only are the toes.
Thank you for this helpful tutorial what clarify a important point of anatomy ^^

Sweet, this could really help with my drawings. Any chance you could do one on the hands and arms? I've had a lot of trouble making the hand look right. And you're probably the best at doing this kind of stuff.

For us "flat footed" humans, the correct term is "plantigrade". Cool how there's a name for both versions! By the way, what's the term for ears like a cat or dog has, where the ears can move around?

I have a question...would it be drastically different between canines and felines for this, or would you say they are more or less equal with some differences like toe numbers?

Twokinds In reply to KHVathiel [2014-04-08 02:26:30 +0000 UTC]
I think it's a matter of personal preference. I typically draw them about the same, maybe a little wider for canines. And of course without the retractable claws - although I don't always detail the claws anyway.

Good point o.o well, with that i guess you're right xD though i will be honest and say i have never actually noticed whether camine claws are or aren't retractable. Huh. Guess i should pay more attention in the future xD but thanks!

)

No kidding! There just aren't enough decent digitigrade tutorials on deviantart! I've been searching for the right one for years and collecting pieces of your work including their legs for future reference when I get more involved with drawing my own digitigrade characters (the leg style you developed is inspiring, because it's exactly what I imagined for own styleΒ and I haven't found anything better to be sure!) Thank you so much for this Tom, your style and characters are so well thought-out and as charming as ever! This is sure to help me a lot!

A very nice overview. I'll be sure to point artists this way if they have issues with legs and feet.
As for scalies, and other creatures with big, heavy tails, the balance issue gets even more complicated! For something like a raptor or alligator, they would probably have their feet positioned a few inches far behind an average human's center of gravity because of the extra weight behind them.
