Description
When The Hobbit movie was coming out I was struck with inspiration to create a full size map of Middle Earth. I wanted to keep it to a "primitive" motif, so I first burned all the shorelines, mountains, rivers, lakes, and forests onto a traditionally brain tanned hide and then used natural powdered pigments mixed with deer eyeball goo (yes, you read that right, its an ancient paint base) to paint it in. Instead of brushed I simply used small sharpened stick to apply the paint. It took roughly two weeks of work, not including tanning the hide. The entire hide is about 9 square feet. This is, by far, the most ambitious pyrography and "primitive" art project I've attempted thus far.
The map was displayed at "The Unexpected Artshow" in L.A in february 2013, and sold for $1,800.
