Description
Featuring Casia
Actaeos' Shrine, Linx Territory, Winter Year 2000
The momentary solace from the snow only lasted a moment. As soon as the scale was offered and the dragon raised, storm clouds bounded overhead and the snow followed soon after. Casia stood frozen on the spot for, as far as she was concerned, an eternity, staring at the egg resting in front of her. What was it? Well, apart from the obviousness of it being an egg. The maer took a weary step forwards, bending down to give the opalescent shell a sniff. As soon as she did, however, the egg began to shake. Cracks began to appear on the surface. Taking a violent leap backwards, Casia watched almost in horror as the egg broke. She wasn’t ready to be a parent! She knew nothing of scybillines! What did they eat? Would she have to hunt bugs? What types of bugs were safe to eat? Were some poisonous? Maybe Scybillines ate fish… would she have to learn how to fish? How would she keep a scybilline child warm? And for that matter, how did one play with cubs anyway? How did you teach one to talk and to defend its self? She was too young to have to deal with these types of questions. Of course, she had considered having children of her own one day, but that was maybe in three to five years. Definitely not right now! Oh Acteaos, where was Nym? Maybe if she picked up the egg and ran she’d be able to find her older sister in time. She’d know what to do. Yeah. That’s what Casia would do. Pick the egg up before it hatched and give it to Nymeria. Casia was fast, she’d surely make it on time.
As soon as that thought formed in Casia’s mind, she reached forwards to somehow grab ahold of the egg but it was too late. With the loudest crack yet, the top of the shell had broken off and something was coming out. Something red. Wait. Now. Casia did not know much about the other herds but she did know one thing: Scybillines were never red. She watched with a newfound horror of truly having no idea what was hatching in front of her.
With a loud gasp for air, a crimson creature burst out of the egg, shaking out its white mane. It blinked, grimacing slightly at the sudden bright light. The creature snorted, raising a paw to attempt to brush off stray eggshells with a face of disgust.
“What…. what are you?” An involuntary shiver ran up Casia’s spine as the creature’s ice blue eyes met her’s. It looked unimpressed, its eyes scanning Casia up and down, then it looked at itself.
“Right, a dragon, of course… that makes more sense. The gods wouldn’t just give me a random scybilline to look after.” Casia gave a sheepish laugh, trying to ignore the fact that the dragon just seemed to give her a solid eye-roll as it clambered out of the remains of its egg. It seemed completely uninterested in the maer, its head turning around as it observed its new surroundings.
“I guess I should probably name you, right?”
No response.
“What about Rhea?”
No response.
“Nyx?”
Still, no response.
“How about Athena?”
The dragon froze for a second before turning to look at Casia and giving her a small nod, sitting down on the snowy ground.
“Alright, Athena it is then.”
