Wow, i dont own photoshop, so how would i do this without it, say on paper, as its very daunting? also, how much is a photoshop package thats good enough for stuff like this?

they have student prices for photoshop for like 200, this program is free to download is amazing [link]
but you would need a drawing tablet for the computer which is at least 80$
the only thing you could really do on paper is watercolor, pastel, colored pencil. i advise searching the web for city painting in what ever medium you have available. example [link] there are resources all over the place Just see what works for you and practice the hell out of it. good luck!

This is incredible! Definitely going to try one of these now. I never realized how important reference pics and variety would be, but it makes sense.

Thanks for this tutorial. When I try to create backgrounds I tend to get distracted by all of the lines and detail. I'm going to work on it though.

This is a really illuminating tutorial, especially for someone like me who has little experience in both drawing cities and finding a method of digital colouring that doesn't make me want to tear my hair out. Thanks.

maybe the text is a bit dense and it's not always easy to follow it (damn Internet, seeing so many images a day makes it hard to just read a text) but honestly we get the point of each step anyhow and the whole is very nice!
it's great you showed your references, there we can totally see the influences in the drawings and thus the importance of references
