Introduced in 1959 as a domestically produced RPK56, the Type 59K is the Japanese People's Army's main squad support weapon. Chambered for the readily available 7.7x35mm Arisaka round instead of the Soviet's 7.62x39mm round, the Type 59K can use the mags of the standard Type 9 assault rifle. The Type 59K uses a large 75 round mag. The Type 59K has a rate of fire of 750rpm. The Type 59K first saw combat service during the Soviet-Afghan War (1979-1989).
