Her mother’s warmth was something she’d always remember.
Born only a few weeks ago—still nameless as every napling began—she was born to the wild. There was nothing wrong with this of course, not that she was old enough to care about “being wild.” However, some Sleepkins in Oakmoth were particular about Feral Sleepkin. Sure, they were sleepkin all the same but their drastically different lifestyles had a tendency to clash.
In fact, it wouldn’t be a surprise to say they were considered a nuisance. Thankfully, as most creatures are, they’re shy and reluctant to approach other, clearly non-feral, sleepkin. But even if feral sleepkins are considered “rare,” their damage could still be felt once one or two of them decide to snag one of the farmer’s livestock every now and then.
Some members of Oakmoth considered this phenomenon to be a moral dilemma. They’re still clearly sleepkins, hell some have even been seen helping other non-feral sleepkin. But these sleepkin still didn’t understand civilization nor the simple manners of not…well eating the livestock raw.
The phenomenon of ‘feralness’ is low and has been kept low. While not everyone agrees with it, there have been rumors of a small, local “Underground Agency” that finds “abandoned” buds and bloomlings who are then given to nearby Kindergartens. Other sleepkins try to figure out which naplings were “once feral” but with so many children coming in it’s nearly impossible to tell. And by the time they become toddlers they’ve already become civilized meaning there’s no point.
The issue is how “feralness” isn’t rampant. It’s quite literally impossible to leave a lone bud in the forest without love or care and expect it to suddenly grow into a wild beast!
To assume a sleepkin simply “becomes a beast” without a nurturing force to put them there could be considered…barbaric. Barbaric in a sense that someone could theoretically “lose their civility” in a short span of months when it would really take years. And even after years they would still have a sense of civility.
Yet this isn’t the case for her.
The nameless napling before she became “Vermin.”
She knew the comfort of her mother’s warmth and the comfort of her father’s scent. She knew how her parents felt against her skin, of scales and furry feathers. She had still been getting used to the funny smells of meat and fruit.
Everything else wasn’t important. All she needed to know right now was familiarity.
She didn’t know the word for it yet, but she knew it was “love.”
Who cared what the “Civil Sleepkins” thought when she had what they thought she didn’t.
Love.
