This is what the Elements of Harmony do right? They make robots?As I am now a brony I felt that a giant robot was in order to spice things up.

Awesome idea. The first time I saw MLP:FiM I was humming "Go Go Power Rangers" when they used the Elements of Harmony. Nice to see I wasn't the only one who thinks like this.
Rarity's horn has some wonky perspective on it. Maybe try a different position just so it doesn't look funny.

i can see the logic in how you did it, though not how i would have combined them it is still very nice.

Yeah, I was thinking the same thing. There's Pegasi on the left side, Earths on the right, and Unicorns in the center. I would have made Earth legs, Pegasus arms (with matching wing), and Unicorn body. Seems like the logical construction to me.
My favorite thing about group shots like this is looking at the expressions on each of their faces. I like what the artist did with them here, although I probably would have given Pinkie a more maniacal laugh instead of just a smirk. I don't know if Twilight would be yelling like that, but Celestia darn it, I love that unicorn so much I don't particularly care.
That said, this is the greatest thing I've ever seen. It's about a 95% pure awesome rating. It's also now my desktop. And that's a big step for me in my Bronyhood.

My method would also be to keep earth ponies for legs since Applejack has great strength and Pinkie is very agile which are good qualities for legs.
I would actually put unicorns for arms so that the respective horns could be used as a sort of singular wolverine claw. They would have magic options still available though and could shoot beams or make constructs, which I like because I see Twilight as the primary offensive arm but Rarity would more make shields(cause jewels are tough).
Finally I've preferred have wings on the body so it works great that the pegasi are left for that, personally I'd have two sets of wings stacked. I think Rainbow could make a good central body, and with Fluttershy for the head that opens up possibility for "the stare".

Interesting idea on the arm equipment, but I dunno ... a unicorn would have to be the head. It's their heads that distinguish them from other pony races. The head of a combining mecha should be represented by the leader of the group, which in this case is generally Twilight. Can you imagine Fluttershy in charge of this thing? Also, double stacked wings sounds like a bad idea from a design standpoint. But then again, so does having two people control one leg each on a bipedal robot...
How about this: Each pony's special ability corresponds to the mecha part they contribute as well as the function they perform.
Twilight's intellect (head) [command]
Fluttershy's heart (body) [power management]
Pinkie's agility (legs) [ground movement]
Dash's speed (wings) [air movement]
Applejack's strength (arm) [offense]
Rarity's wits (arm) [defense]

I understand what your saying about the head and 9/10 times I'd agree, but if you look back at things like old school power rangers, the red ranger didn't always make the head(in fact the only one that hasn't ever made the head is the blue ranger). Red was most likely and usually is the head, but not always. I only say that to make the point that however likely, there is nothing set in stone that says twilight MUST be the head.
I'm a sucker for symmetry so that's why I made my bot like I did, but I do like your new layout. As for double wings I probably did a crummy job of conveying what I actually meant; it'd look something like these [link] personally I like that look. I like your idea for the components but this is my slight tweak of it
Twilight=head
Fluttershy=body+wings
Rainbow=offensive arm(quick attacks)
Rarity=defensive arm
Pinkie=leg(agility)
Applejack=leg(strong attacks)
