Elisa, Sharon, and Rachel were students at the School of Magic. They took their studies seriously, never proceeding on a homework assignment until all were agreement on how to cast their assigned spell. Today, they had been gathering the ingredients when the cauldron being used by the students in the dorm room below theirs exploded, blowing a hole in their floor and allowing the ingredients to mix with their own, with unintended consequences. Elisa became transparent, while Sharon became faceless (though she did gain a pair of antenna), and Rachel's body became a large ball from the waist down.

   To put it mildly, the girls were shocked when the school's administrators asked if they might be willing to remain in their altered states until the end of the current semester. At first they said no, but when they were guaranteed extra credit for taking part in a series of studies as they currently were and were also promised generous financial compensation, they changed their minds. For example, the Army was seeking ways its soldiers could render themselves invisible, a telecommunications company was researching methods people could communicate telepathically, and a research institute wanted to develop devices to aid the mobility impaired.

   When the semester ended and the girls were changed back by their professor, they had earned enough extra income they were eventually able to graduate with no student loan debt at all!
