Description

On my quest to draw the perfect Jeff, I got sick of reinventing the wheel all the time and continually working from imperfect references or things that weren’t quite the angle that I needed, so I’ve attempted to fill in some of the blanks here with this sheet that I made. I understand the value of straight on T-posed references, but I like to work from slightly more naturalistic poses sometimes, especially when it’s a face. I think it helps if the subject looks more ‘alive’ - But I have included some very neutral straight on, side and 3/4 in addition to some things with a little more life to them. It’s a little difficult to make appealing expressions with the default bones in XNLara as I’ve discovered, but I’ve done my best to come up with a workable compromise between totally neutral and an expressive moment.

For the benefit of myself and other artists I’ve included some of the notes I’ve made during drawing studies I’ve done of him. It’s nice to see what parts of the face should be blocked out by the cap at given angles. The bloody cap is the most annoying bit of him to be honest, and that’s because the ballcaps I have (including the official Bioware SR2 cap) are actually a different cut and style to the one in-game, which has made photo references annoying.

These models are part of a package I found on DeviantArt, made by Padme4000 . I’m not sure why there wasn’t a ‘correct’ hat included in the package but I’m not going to look a gift horse in the mouth; the hat here has the right shape, line placement and proportion so that’s all I’m bothered about.

Just to decode my own notes so other people can understand them better: The philtrum is the bit with a divot between the nose and the upper lip. Jeff’s appears rather long and this is enhanced by the face he has thin lips. Including this is an easy way to make a face appear more like his. The supraorbital ridge is the part of the skull the eyebrows sit on, and speaking generally, tends to be more prominent in men. Jeff’s eyebrows are a little bit effeminate given that they sit just above it and are so highly arched.
