Description

The Gibbon task force, in the first year of the Clone Wars was the most powerful force of vessels anywhere in the battlefields of the conflict. 2 Tectors (Tector and Gibbon), 3 Imperators-later the Imperial Star Destroyer-(Imperator, Thunderclap, and Vanguard), 2 Victories, 6 Venators, 10 Acclimators, 12 Carracks, and 5 Dreadnoughts made it a truly nightmarish force that would have heralded an early end to the conflict. Unfortunately for the Republic and the senators desiring peace, Palpatine would take matters into his own hand and as Sidious would hire a corrupt Kuat programmer who would leave a hidden virus in the computers of the Tectors and Imperators.

The first mission this force would undertake was an assault on a Subjucator construction base in a distant system. The first portion of the assault went well with the Confederate forces losing a large portion of the defense fleet and the Republic forces had suffered only a dozen fighters lost due to a strategy of using the Star Destroyers to absorb the firepower and the smaller ships to guard them leaving bombers free to decimate CIS ships with the help of the Star Destroyers. Admiral Rejean, commander of the task force then targeted the being constructed dreadnoughts and the virus activated. Immediately the onboard navigation computer began making random jump point decisions. As Gibbon and Tector hadn't been affected at that point Rejean slaved the Imperators to his computer in an effort to stop tragedy. The virus activated afterwards and all four ships vanished while Tector's captain realized what was happening and shut down the computers.

The Tector's 1st Lieutanent, Gar Stanver. then proceeded to destroy the navigation computer (eradicating the infected hardware) and slaved the entirety of the ships R3 and R2 units to make a working navigation computer. As Tector finished its mission and proceeded to escape, the ship started to suffer life support failures. Captain Durek proceeded to have the central computer core blown apart while Lt. Stanver worked to make a decentralized computer system to keep life support operational while evacuating non-essential crew to other vessels to reduce the strain.

These half-measures worked and the Tector with its task force escaped oncoming Separtist forces. The task force was ravaged with not one of the ships requiring less than a year of repair work to undo the damage and the loss of all but a handful of fighter and bomber craft would delay any chance of the fleet leaving. However the greatest damage was to Kuat which was taken aback at the scale of the losses of all 4 capital ships despite such a brilliant opening. The search would lead to the discovery of the programmer and her execution by compactor. Despite safeguards input into the Tector and all future Star Destroyers, the Republic forced the decentralization of the computer systems ironically increasing the vulnerability to R droid sabotage later on. These delays would see the ship classes not be introduced for over two years.

The only bright spot was the friendship between Stanver and Durek which resulted in their mutual promotions. Stanver would take Tector and its centralized computer system as his ship while Durek would start on the path to become a grand moff and the true father of the baby star destroyer class.

As to the 4 Star Destroyers, the Rebel Alliance would soon take advantage of the lost fleet.
