Description "Uru?" The queen's voice startled the cubs, Naasor falling over his sister when he let go of Rashidi's ear. Uru giggled at him as her mother approached.

"Yes, mum?"

"Your father wants you to acompany him, he's waiting for you by the acacia grove by the den."

"Are we going to talk to the hyenas again?" Jahara asked, staring up at his mother from his position on his back. He kicked out with one paw, knocking Rehema off him. The younger cub shook out his mane and took a step back to let the queen speak to her cubs.

"I'm not sure what Mohatu wants Uru for, but you have to stay here, Jahara," the cub blinked up at her, then began to roll onto his belly.

"But we always go together!"

"I know you're disappointed, Jahara, but sometimes Uru will have to go alone. She's to be queen, after all," Uru had already darted off toward the trees, but Ade leaned down to nuzzle her son. "You're father will take you on his patrols again soon. Honestly, it is still surprising for me, in my father's pride a lioness would never have inherited."

"You've said that before, mum," Jahara sat up, reaching Ade's shoulder, "but why not? Father's never said anything about Uru not inheriting. She's older, after all."

"In some prides, males inherit before females, even if they are younger," Ade explained, "many there think a lioness is not strong enough to rule a pride. If rogues come, they could not defend their pride."

"Isn't that why Aunt Urbi lives with the Mbala? Because she couldn't defend the Pride?"

"Not exactly," Ade paused, frowning, before continuing, "it's different because she's blind. Urbi stepped down, she wasn't just bypassed from the inheritance."

"Oh. But isn't the Guard supposed to protect the lands while the queen rules?"

"Yes, but not all Prides have Guards. In my father's Pride, his heir was the only male allowed to remain in the Pride. The others had to leave to form their own Prides."

"Wouldn't the Pride have seen stronger if they stayed?"

"Perhaps, but the Chief was concerned that the younger lions might fight his son to steal the Pride. It is common in the lands in the East, so it's safer to send the others away." Ade paused again, looking down at Jahara, "I'm sorry your father couldn't take you with him this time, Jahara. Do you want to come with my hunting party?"

"No, it's ok. I'll stay here with Rehema."

Ade nodded, looking to the younger cub, "all right, then. Stay safe, Sifa is in the den if you need her."
