March 10, 1974 issue #9 of DC's Swamp Thing by Len Wein and Bernie Wrightson debuted. I've always loved this cover- I mean it's Bernie c'mon there's hundreds - but this one stuck in particular. Core memory, cultural moment, not sure exactly the anchor but nonetheless it was the good kind. Swamp Thing is one of those creature characters that there are countless permutations and variants of. You can lean into forest god of the parliament of trees, more toward a visceral brutal body form, or even a classic handsome line silhouette. It's a banquet of choice given his elemental status. Any of the Symbiotes at Marvel, as a recent example, allow this same sort of form exploration. I'd gotten part of the way there with this one a few years back but it doesn't hold up entirely. Anyway, ol' Swampy is woefully under-repped at comic shows and I'm going to start doing my part to help change that with this still in progress tribute.
