well, there are some tricks I have been finding... don't be afraid to use really odd numbers in the formulas, like scale and min R... and use very small numbers for the rotation and the julia... doesn't always work, but I've had the best luck trying weird stuff like that...

aother thing... sometimes it can help to use really high iterations on the ASurf formula, like 40 or higher

well, yeah it can mess with color a bit in the navi and even the render... but I never worry about color until I have everything else the way i want it, then I do whatever I want with colors... so what it looks like when messing with iterations doesn't really mean much to me... I'm just going by shapes at that point

Sometimes it works but other times it doesn't , sometimes zooming in then playing around can get neat stuff too

well, I used to do that too... then one day I just didn't feel like looking at art when I first got on, so I looked at journals and polls first, seemed like more fun that way... and that lead to doing all journals, polls and messages first, partly because of the damn spam filter on dA... I can never look at all the new art and post all the comments I want without tripping that spam filter.. sometimes as many as five times... so I do all my messages first, then look at art, and when I hit the spam filter, that's when I open photoshop and do my borders and stuff on any new renders, and if I hit the spam filter again, I upload my new art... usually by then I can finish all my new art...

yeah, I know... i can usually view about 30, then the spam thing pops up, and unless I wait at least ten or twenty minutes, it starts to come up after about three or four... that's why I usually save adding borders to my new fractals, and submitting them until I get a spam message, because that usually takes enough time that I can go back and do ten or twenty messages before it pops up again...
