Description
So I decided it would be fun to include others into my art and stuff. I'm not eloquent unless writing prose, so don't judge me!The name of the interview will be - "ask the character". Sh!tty title but if you got a better one, go ahead and tell me. The point of the interview is to ask the character to describe their setting, their backstory, and themselves by answering the select few questions. I want people tagged in this so I tag - My-Sword-is-Bigger , Gleam-Bee , and any other munchkin who wants to participate.
The rules are simple - pick an original character from your original fiction, who have their own backstory and name. Draw a portrait of them(or use a pre-existing one if you don't feel like it), then convince them to answer these questions.
In this post I shall have Haldis answer those questions, so you can see the example... also it's a nice excuse to dump stuff about my work while also having people somewhat invested.
1. Hello. How are you?
-Hi, and I'm fine.
2. I drew this portrait of you, what do you think?
-Umm... thank you? It's fine.
3. What's your name?
-Haldis Valdikssen of the bog-springs.
4. What is your gender role, and how it differs from those found in your Author's culture?
-I am a she-man. I suppose my author's world's analogy would be a transgender man? The difference, however, is that we are still female, and don't have a notion of passing as men. It's near impossible considering we can't make a woman look like a man, and our men don't shave their beards. He might pass for a boy, however. But it's easier to be just a she-man because you get treated like an adult. As for what the role means, essentially the she-man are substitutes for men and are expected to keep up with men both physically and mentally. They are often forbidden from having children.
5. What kind of settlement did you grow up in? What made it stand out from the rest?
-I grew up in a village called "The Bog-springs". It got its name because before settling it was a land teeming with springs that flowed into a bog. Nowadays it's been drained, and boating streams have been dug out for the convenience of travel.
6. What kind of things characterize your homeland the most?
-Red-haired men with long hair and thick beards. Most of us have red hair, there are a few blonde and brown-haired people walking about but they are rare. The great-oaks come to mind as well.
7. What do people in your homeland eat?
-Food. Mostly large bugs, some fish, and vegetables. We have bread as well but it's not quite that popular.
8. What is your favourite food?
-Roasted salmon, stuffed with grubs, onions, and eggs.
9. What would you like to change about your people?
-Hmm... make them more openminded?
10. Which beliefs and customs of your culture do you disagree with?
-I disagree with the belief that the gods are good. I believe they are neither, and humans to them are merely means to an end.
11. Would your people accept your life choices?
-Probably not.
12. What is taboo in your culture?
-Cutting your hair if you're a man or a she-man. Cut hair on a warrior usually means they've been dishonoured by their enemies either by being a slave or held as a captive. They bring dishonour to their clan and tribe.
13. If you found a treasure chest where would you find it, what would it be guarded by, what would it and its contents be like?
-It would probably be under a burial mound, guarded by a draug. Would be a wooden chest, half-rotten, mouldy. Inside I would find things like scraps of silver and golden rings, eroded weapons and arrowheads, carved antler, and amber.
14. What do you think about your author's culture?
-It's a bit depressing. People there often work with strangers who care nothing about them, while over here we work with family, and are our own employers.
15. Describe yourself.
-I'm not vain enough to describe myself. I have red hair and I'm a bit tall for a she-man. Lean and muscular on my upper body, a bit fatter around the legs, wider in hips. My upper lip is thicker than I like.
16. How do you feel about criticism?
-If it's useful, I don't mind.
17. I don't like your face. What do you have to say for yourself?
-Make a better one?
18. What kind of places are your favourite to hang around in and why?
-I like the bogs and the ruins. The ruins hold many secrets and the bogs are good for seeking solitude.
19. What do your people use as currency in your world? What other things are used for trading(if there are any)?
-For currency, we use the material, rather than coins. Coins can be faked, materials can be tested for purity. Gold, silver and amber are our currency. Often they are made into jewellery for the convenience of carrying. Other things used for trading are antler bone, hides, fabrics, food, iron.
20. How much wood could a woodchuck chuck if a woodchuck could chuck wood?
-Uhm... I don't know what a woodchuck is if I'm honest. Never seen such a rodent. If we go with the size and anatomy of a squirrel, with sufficient grip, I think it could chuck something weighing about as much as two pine cones.
21. What is your favourite joke?
-A blacksmith walks into a bar.
22. What is the most dangerous creature in your homeland?
-My father. In all seriousness, it could be the black viper. When bitten by it, you will die after a few agonizing days. This is where you'll thank the gods for making you a wimp.
23. What do your people call foreigners?
-Mostly just outlanders. If they come from neighbouring tribes, we just use the name of their tribe.
24. Did someone else inhabit your homeland before your people arrived there? If yes, who? How have they affected your culture?
-The Dveygr. Pointy-eared, grey-skinned people, who mostly lived inside their caves. My people, when they travelled to these lands, pushed them to the north. There are a few things about us that leaves a sense of their presence. Their ruins are still here, at times we are born with pointed ears, and our freckles are grey. Often we make homes and temples within the caves. Mines, once depleted, are made into homes as well. We also live up to 120 years on average. We also like eating insects - something unique to the Tainavi tribes and Dveygr. I hear they eat insects in the warm lands up north, but that's long ways from here.
25. Which quality do you appreciate the most in people?
-Efficiency or creativity. Perhaps creativity which is aimed at achieving efficiency.
26. Are you a loner or a social butterfly?
-Neither. I like solitude but by no means do I shun social interaction, rather, I tire from it easily.
27. What is your occupation?
-I was trained both as a soldier and a blacksmith. Where I live, the blacksmiths double as dentists, as well as interrogators. They also amputate infected limbs.
28. Who do you have to thank for helping you reach the position/skill level required for said occupation?
-My mother and mentors at school.
29. Define the word "friend".
-Someone who I can trust to not cheat me.
30. Define the word "enemy".
-Someone who is more likely to kill me, than be honest with me.
31. What deeds are considered evil by your people?
-Evil is often linked with cowardice, greed, and selfishness. Praying on those weaker than you is one example.
32. What are the most common names people have in your homeland?
-I honestly never thought about it. Might be Ilvar, or Aldis.
33. What are the most popular leisure activities in your homeland? What is your opinion on them?
-Well, there's your regular drinking, but I assume you mean something more? A lot of those activities include praising gods or proving our own strength. Women prefer dancing, singing, sewing, sharing food, and board games. Men like board games too but instead of the feminine activities, they favour wrestling, tug of war, mock battles...
34. Thoughts on the activities?
-I think they're all fun - both women's and men's. The board games I like better because I get more time to think. The mock wars are good too. Usually, I am the scout.
35. What is the new trend the youth of your homeland follow?
-Tooth filing. Some like making them pointed, others just file them flat. It's interesting, looks good, but I never wanted to try it. It's as painful as it looks, a few guys had them done by me.
36. Which would you prefer more - mushroom picking or fishing?
-Mushroom picking. You can't find poisonous fish in our lands and I can come across a delicious bug while at it.
37. Any last words to impart before saying goodbye?
-No, I'm good. Thank you for inquiring.
38. Goodbye!
-Thank you for interviewing me, and goodbye.
