The problem with letting relis, who may otherwise be perfectly fine human beings, meddle with science, is that it will sooner or later result in 'blasphemous truths' being uncovered, facts which go against doctrine, and which therefore cannot be mentioned, let alone be elaborated on in publications. This will obviously hamper scientific progress. Long story short: the end result will be that your country will be conquered and submitted by foreign powers.
