This picture found me rather than I it. Not sure the numbers apply in this case, but the bigger picture seems clear. I'm not sure the Viennese interpreted the Turkish onslaught in apocalyptic terms, the Byzantines certainly did. I suppose the Viennese did so as well. Pseudo-Methodius explained it all, if I remember well.
