Bar code (or QR code etc.) panic appears to have largely vanished in favor of child-eating infant sacrificers. Speaking of which: aren't those 'theories' simply a rumor spun out of control about what happened in the Epstein home? How many steps in the public imagination does it take to go from the sexual abuse of minors to ritual infanticide? Three at most, would be my guess. Irrationality and speculation rooted in observable fact after all. And of course the framing is an entirely different matter. Rumors can be picked up and molded into productive narratives, where productive to some may mean destructive to others.

When a society refuses to acknowledge the complaints of some of its most vulnerable (e.g. the prostitute as an 'incredible witness') in favor of its big shots (of all creed), stuff may take on a life of its own, and become a powerful force in its own right.
