This one's linked directly to Thick Skull Syndrome www.deviantart.com/undefinedre… , which did help me to finally home in on the bone of contention. It turns out that if I want to display, say, 5 fields, I need to divide something either by 6 or by 4, but never by 5. Which goes against all intuition. The left panel has black and white excluded as starting and final colors, the right panel hasn't. Now I can finally turn my attention to using masks for tackling RGB values one at a time. Which should be more rewarding than struggling with start/stop values and increments in a loop. Yay. Btw, the white at the bottom of the right panel isn't pure white due to unavoidable rounding issues. Close enough though.
