Another minor victory for this and future generations: rasterscript has given birth to bubblescript. Which happens to be a lot simpler too. I was looking at an image created by rasterscript and processed/mangled in the GIMP, and it occurred to me that I could make the script blow bubbles. And since my creativity has reached a low point due to an incessant offshore wind (I need ocean air to be alive, rather than to exist in a kind of physical survival mode), I figured I might as well take to coding again.

I had to take a strange detour to set the bubble opacity: first I had to create a gradient which creates no gradient at all. Apparently it isn't possible to pass an opacity value directly with a color (just now it occurs to me that maybe I could pass an 8-byte color code; must try that out).
