Once a sufficiently safe and lightweight way to store energy has been found, fossil fuel will be done for, not for ecological or ideological reasons, but because it simply won't make sense any longer. I don't think it is that far off. A possible downside would be that it might allow us humans to become even more rapacious with regard to the planet we live on. Nothing has no downside. And from an absolute viewpoint we humans may be smarter than animals, but we're still incredibly stupid.
