I had completely forgotten about that cool GIMP filter called Despeckle (Filters -> Enhance -> Despeckle). When set to ridiculous values, it creates really awesome effects when run repetitively. See for example Mindshaper www.deviantart.com/undefinedre… or Who Have No Voice www.deviantart.com/undefinedre… . It can change an image completely beyond recognition, and in quite unpredictable ways, which is what makes it cool to begin with. The key is to run the Despeckle filter over and over again on its own output, until all of the original image has disappeared and the screen is filled with the filter's own 'side-effect garbage'.
