Rock painting from the Altai mountains in southern Russia. Apparently these paintings were a hit last year in the tabloid press, but I can't find anything serious about them. Must dig into it some other time. Based on what I've read about Siberian shamanism, these are most likely the spirits of ancestors. Those started out as animals, but in a later development of totemism/shamanism human-like figures were added, often with strange features which some take for proof of an "alien" presence a long time ago. Available articles are mostly about the red, burnt ochre paint, but I decided to focus on the shapes instead. Ancient rock art never fails to be deeply impressive.
