I've discovered Places as an alternative for gthumb, which keeps crashing on my system. Places uses the Eye of GNOME image viewer. In many ways the combination is far superior to gthumb, if you don't expect your viewer to be able to resize, change format etc that is. Which I don't, because I can do all that stuff with the GIMP. The only drawback is that EOG lacks that one extremely useful feature: keep previous zoom.
