The title can be interpreted in two ways: the obvious scientific way, or the Gnostic way. According to the latter, human spirits are shards of divine light, scattered about the darkness of material existence. Their sole purpose in life is to find their way back to the Divine and Original Light. Similar views are found in Christian and other mysticism, although mysticism in theory doesn't fully reject material reality. Still, mainstream Christianity isn't exactly free of body-(self-)hate, which is a logical outflow of the negative and pessimistic view on material reality, and a firm indication of what exactly one is dealing with.
