Description Unclean men, in 11th century Russian spelling (and phrasing). It could also be translated as 'impure people', or, in this case 'impure peoples', since in its context it refers to the nomadic peoples who lived to the east of the Kievan Rus state. Since these were Muslims, and as such servants of the Antichrist from a Byzantine Orthodox perspective, their frequent attacks on Kievan Rus were prone to be felt as Signs of the End Times. Which for the Kievan Russians wan't all bad news, because as God's Favorites they were the only ones who were going to be saved, after all the other Christian peoples, who were also impure by nature, had fallen into apostasy (by the time these words were written, the impure Catholics had already gone lost). The idea would later be transferred to Muscovite Russia.

This is the very essence of the idea of Moscow as the Third Rome. It is all about being Chosen. With this chosenness (which involves Russia's famous moral and spiritual superiority (Putin's words) comes the heavy burden of responsibility for humanity as a whole and the entire planet Earth, indeed the Universe, as well as of having to suffer more than any other people because of said chosenness. If Russia isn't exactly an economic success, it is in fact a good sign. It is because of its higher purpose, which will only be revealed at the End Time. It is something depraved Europeans and hylic Americans cannot understand. Because of the uncleanness.
