Description Update: Since Media Controls is getting an update in story and development, I have thought about the fan character making. I have had pretty bad situations with people stealing and copying, and plagiarizing my work during these years which have been stressful for me. And since I originally didn't even plan to make this concept open for just anyone to use (but people started making them anyway and broke the design rules)
I request if you didn't make fan characters for my personal project.

I made this guide for clarification how the designs work in this world, but it just brought more light onto my project and brought more people in to make characters based on my project. Obviously I can't stop anyone from making fan characters, but it would be my wish if people didn't. And I hope you understand and respect that.

I hate how selfish this sounds, i just want to protect my work. I just want to stop this before it gets out of hand, even though it might be too late.

----------------

Cleaned up the information with the help of Sycopomp . Hopefully this is clearer now!

Controls belong exclusively to the story they were made for: Media Controls. They are not an adoptable species, meaning you cannot sell designs of them, use them in your own stories, or claim ownership over their conception. The following guide is to help you through the creation process of an accurate-to-canon Fan Character (FC)!

"Media Controls" is the title of the story. The main cast of characters in the story are a species called controls. There are other species in the story (Loadings, Data, Viruses, Glitches, Bugs) that have different design rules than controls. This guide will focus on controls.
There are three subspecies of controls: Media Controls, Commands, and Functions. Fundamentally there are no real differences between each subspecies, but in real life a control is something on your computer that performs a certain task. An arrow key is a command, your saving is a function, etc.

This is a comprehensive list of all of the canonically accepted controls:
Media Controls: Eject, Loop, Mute, Pause, Play, Record, Repeat, Rewind, Shuffle, Stop, Volume.
Commands: Alt, Arrow Keys (Up, Down, Left, Right), Backspace, Caps, Copy, Ctrl, Cut, Delete, End, Esc, Paste, Print Screen, Space.
Functions: Brightness, Cursor, Download, History, Info, Power, Refresh, Reset, Save, Search, Zoom.
(If it's not on the list, it's not in the canon!

Character Creation Notes:
  • A control chooses their appearance when they are created, and can modify it slightly when they respawn. Their mass must remain the same; ie. a control cannot develop four new arms without first taking that mass away from another part of their body.
  • Similarly, controls choose their pronouns. Physically they are genderless.
  • A control gains a new eye upon respawn. The number of eyes a control has equates to the number of times they have died.
  • When they die, controls lose a portion of their memories. These memories can be absorbed by anyone, so long as both of them have at least one eye, and the control hasn't respawned yet. (Viruses and bugs can also pick up memories; Loadings are capable of it, but typically don't.)
  • If a control loses a limb, they lose a portion of their memories.
  • Every control has at least one colour in their design; their eyes, saliva, tears, and blood are all the same colour, and cannot be black/white/gray. Controls can have up to three colours in their design, including their eye colour. They can also have black, white, and gray accents on their design. (A control with no eyes or scars can appear monochrome [black/white/gray], but their blood/tears would have colour.)
  • A control's pupils can be a colour other than black. (Eye and pupil colours cannot change in different eyes, however; ex. one black pupil and one red pupil, or one blue eye and one green eye.)
  • Controls don't sleep, though they do need to rest if they expend a lot of energy.
  • Controls are able to summon a floating screen which connects them to the System's equivalent of the "internet," allowing them to store items, change outfits, contact other controls, etc.
  • Because of the way they are created, controls do not have physical genders, nor the capacity for romantic love. Likewise they do not have families; parents, siblings, cousins, etc. are concepts that do not exist in the Media Controls world.

World Notes:
  • Every System is different from each other. Laws, culture, technology, etc. all vary from one System to the next. Each System has different roles for their controls as well. (Ex. Power and Delete are the leaders in the Media Controls story, but another System might have Reset as the leader. Some Systems may not even have a leader.)
  • Each System can only create one of each control. If that control leaves, becomes a bug, or is eaten by a virus, then the System cannot replace it. The only way to get a new version of that control is for one to come from a different System.
  • A System can only register one of each control at a time; if a visiting control is not part of the System, it cannot respawn in that System. A new control must register themselves at the Heart of the System to become a part of it, and to be able to respawn there.
  • Shortcuts are the name for the windows/portals that lead to different worlds in the System. The USB port is a doorway that leads to the Void, which is populated with Systems. The Void is also home to viruses, glitches, bugs, and the occasional lost control.
  • Bytes are the currency in Systems.
  • Since controls don't need to sleep, nighttime is meant for relaxation and fun.

you probably get this a lot but could crop work as a control?

Crop is only used in art related programs, so it wouldn't follow the rules.

i have a Question, what is a system in this world? and can you make ur own?

UnknownSpy In reply to LuckyArtistStar [2017-06-19 11:08:03 +0000 UTC]

A system is their whole world. If you would make your set of media control characters, it would be your system.

Would resize be considered as a media command?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UnknownSpy In reply to nightsatfreddysfanx [2017-06-19 08:55:43 +0000 UTC]

Isn't that something that is only inside, for example in an art program, like photoshop?

nightsatfreddysfanx In reply to UnknownSpy [2017-06-19 09:01:48 +0000 UTC]

Yes, but I would think it would be pretty interesting.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UnknownSpy In reply to nightsatfreddysfanx [2017-06-19 09:03:56 +0000 UTC]

In that case resize won't work. Controls are things that exsist on the computer, without any help of programs, apps or the internet.

Pandapartypc In reply to UnknownSpy [2017-06-19 18:12:04 +0000 UTC]

by that logic, shouldn't play, pause & stop not even exist (and others like shuffle) they would need a program, like a movie or music player to be there.. you dont just press play/pause/stop on a blank computer

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

LadyinStumptown In reply to Pandapartypc [2017-06-20 16:16:42 +0000 UTC]

True, but given that there's youtube and other similar programs on the internet they wouldn't necessarily be tied down to just one program. Your argument is still completely valid though and I agree with it completely. However I don't think they wouldn't exist, just be very limited without a program.

Pandapartypc In reply to LadyinStumptown [2017-06-21 01:09:01 +0000 UTC]

i meant exist in terms of this universe but yea i could see the universal program argument seeing as there's many different types of programs/platforms that use those controls, even if they are all programs

Ooh, very interesting! I always like seeing what design principles people use with their characters.

Do controls associated with a certain symbol (e.g. the triangle for Play, the two bars for Pause, etc.) have to include that symbol in their design?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

UnknownSpy In reply to Gusindor [2017-06-19 08:56:48 +0000 UTC]

In some way or an other, it would be best so. They should represent their symbol (if they have one) in some way.

Yes, the same way as Info is a control.

UnknownSpy In reply to austinthegallade [2017-06-18 22:27:30 +0000 UTC]

No, but it would be something some commands could get access to. (It's going to be some kind of skill or something, so it can't be a Control.)
