Description

Nishki refused to look up from his reflection in the water, his mane rippling with each breath as his nose came to dip into the water. Soft breaths push water away from his nose as he remained still. He worried that he had disturbed his own spirit by stepping into Mother Aga's lake. When he heard nothing, he ever so slowly lifted his head, expecting to see the sleeping spirit where she was laying. Her head was lifted as she regarded Nishki with a gentle smile her eyes still firmly shut.
Nishki felt a sense of ease flood his body as he let a slow breath escape. A small smile formed on his face as he slowly stepped back into the water, knowing that he didn't upset her own spirit. Ever so slowly Aga rose from her watery bed, the fireflies that had joined Nishki on his trek blinked around her as thought to encourage her to get up. He remained still as she kept her eyeless gaze on him.

“I'm so glad to finally see you in person, little one.” Aga's voice was like a gentle breeze and Nishki felt his body move closer to her. His foot steps pushing through the still shallowed waters. From below the waters, Nishki could feel the warmth and comfort coming from his talisman as it gave off a faint glow from below the water's surface.

“I chose you for a reason.” Aga continued to speak as Nishki felt a wave of motherly love and pride radiate from her. “You will face many adversities on your journey, but just as the forest always springs back to life after a fire, you will grow with each challenge you face and overcome. You have no doubt encountered other, lesser spirits on your way here?"

He thought back to his night and his encounter with the stones, merely raising his head higher in pride of helping Aga thus far. Aga's soft smile grew a little as she lumbered forward to get closer to him.
“There will be many more where those came from, and not all of them will be friendly. Meelanik, the Devourer, seeks to cause a great upheaval. While I hate to burden you with such a heavy task, Sikrinerk, guide of lost souls, requires our help. There is a special spirit that Sikrinerk seeks, one that is drawn to living tokotas such as yourself. This will allow you to capture it. Seek out Nagruk. He will tell you what to do next." Her motherly tone slipped to a serious one as she lifted a paw from the water where a small grouping of vines grew. They curled and twisted on each other before one curled outward in a hook. A blossom formed before growing and bursting open into an earthly lantern, formed from roots, bark and leaves where it housed a few fireflies that happily flickered around inside.
Aga took a few steps backwards, ripping water around her before she looked upon Nishki. Her smile remained while her lower body began to flicker out into the fireflies that happily disappeared into the sky. Nishki felt his jaw drop as he heard a low laughter come from Aga. Her front still stood as more of her body stayed before she spoke as gently as the morning breeze, “If you need anything at all, my dear, don’t hesitate to call on me."

With those words, she disappeared leaving two large fireflies where her eyes had been before they too disappeared into the morning sky. Nishki stood in the water, head tilted to the sky as he felt a shudder run through his body. He truly encountered Mother Aga and he was in for a much larger quest than he had thought. He slowly padded over to the lantern, taking in its appearance before unhooking it and watching the vines disappear back into the water. He looked back into the forest before thinking to himself, 'I can't do this on my own. It's time I return to the ranch...'
