Description Did you know that there are no requirements to be a plague doctor during the Medieval Ages? That's probably why a lot of their patients didn't survive the plague.

What a time to be alive.

The description is somewhat true, although I don't think the amount of casualties would have been any lower, if there were no doctors. It was not really the doctors' fault for the Black Death, they just weren't prepared to deal with such an epidemic. The western world was largely dominated by the Roman Catholic Church, and so many fields of research were heavily influenced by religion and superstition at the time.

Also a plague doctor with a beaked mask and leather overcoat is actually a 17th Century innovation, and has nothing to do with the Middle Ages. The famous mask was attributed to medical professors and students of the University of Montpellier in 1619 AD. These were trained physicians. Charles de Lorne is credited with the invention of the mask and garb. A lot of movies makers see these as being symbolic of the Black Death, and so they tend to throw them into historical time periods where they have no business being there.
