Description
Ideally, I would have some brilliant story about these three dwarves and why they're cracking open a gate in the roots of a gnarled tree and why the one dwarf has a key and the other dwarf is giving him a "get on with it" look and maybe touching on why the dwarves look like miniature Santas or the exact cause of my favorite dwarf's male pattern baldness.But I got nothin'. I just wanted to paint tree bark and something with a honkin' big nose and a beard.

I suspect that a large percentage of the story hidden in this picture is contained in the sigil on the door. It looks like it represents some sort of masked Aztec spider god -- the "Leroy-like" fingers suggest it is attempting to squeeze its way through the opening, so perhaps it represents a gateway to another realm, rather than to a dank dark hole under a tree.
Why the dwarves are there, and why they are opening the gate, can probably be summed up in one word: gold. (Although, dwarves being dwarves, it could also conceivably be beer, in which case perhaps the sigil simply represents "Inn of the Drunken Spider" -- but that changes the whole tone! Besides, they probably wouldn't require a key to get into their local tavern.)

It reminds me of the time the third earth people released the evil Pumm-ra from his tomb in Thundercats. I actually looked for the thunder cats emblem, I thought it was a tribute. Sweet stuff; What's beyond? love the mystery!
