The ferals of Torumaline Forest -- whom he and his mother encountered often enough, living on the outskirts of the mystery dungeon -- knew best what foods were safe to eat, and reliably avoided those that weren't.

The best example of this was watching them tell oran berries apart from oren berries, the notorious lookalike berry known for causing nausea when eaten. These ferals could always be trusted to discern a safe oran berry while leaving even ripe oren berries untouched on the bush, even though they look nearly identical to the untrained eye.
