I mostly don't like how he looks in 3D, most of the time in 2D he looks okay.
That said if I was put into a mystery dungeon type scenario but with the Mario series I'd porably try to aim for a koopa or whatever the dragon things are.
And yes the green and yellow is a callback to Scotte.
