compact cameras have smaller focal lengths than SLRs... that's why they achieve bigger DOF (disadvantage), and why they can focus on very close distances (advantage)... remember, compact cameras can do quite good macros with their small zoom lens, while SLRs need dedicated prime lenses for the same thing.

it's also called "lightpainting" (which is the direct translation of luminography .. but well...). picasso did that every now and then ... painting with a flash light while documenting with a long exposure photograph.
