Description Series: Attack on Titan
----

I recently made my Attack on Titan boots for my Hanji cosplay for Aki Con,
and I had a few people ask me how I made them,
so here is a little tutorial!

This is my first time making one,
and it took 3 hours to put together X'D
My gawd!
So much more respect for people that make these OTL

---
I am FAR FROM AN EXPERT
and this is just one of many ways you can make these boots.
But hopefully it will be of some help to people ^^
---

S/N: If there is something I've made that you would like me to do a tutorial on let me know.
I can't do a full costume tutorial because it would be to hard and long to explain,
but if there is a part of a costume or sewing/building technique I will try my best!
---------------------------------

EDIT
Because I've been getting some repeating questions,
I'll post a mini FAQ..

How much fabric did you use?
I bought 1m and had almost half of it left over,
but this depends on the width of your fabric, so picture 4 boots laying down ^^'

What does the bottom look like?/Does the heel stick out?
Yes, the heel sticks out and the bottom of the cover. I use heel boots for this reason since it keeps the boot cover from twisting and shifting while you walk.
Also if your a clutz like myself, then the extra traction is awesome!

Can I use flats/bare feet/shorter boots
I used tall boots because...
- they are easy to trace (tracing your leg is a pain in the ass)
- They protect your feet
- They give the boot covers a strong stiff surface to rest ageist
 - and you will not see any shoe lines or pant bunchies

But in the end you can do whatever you want, this is a guide line using methods I have tested and that have worked for me.

Amazing tutorial! Can you tell me how many yards of fabric did you need?

This tutorial is lovely, but I was wondering do you have to use boots? Im using this for a different cosplay, a costume from the Hetalia fandom but this is one of the ones that will look the best.

It's harder without boots as a base,
but I'm sure it's possible with adjusting.

I edited the Description with more info on this.

Is there a way to make them without the center seam on the front of the boot? This is the best tutorial I've found, I'm just a pain in the ass perfectionist. Dx

Valdrein In reply to KaeporaGaebora3 [2014-02-17 19:19:10 +0000 UTC]

You can do dart manipulation to shift the seam to go around the ankle,
as long as you position your grain line correctly and have a stretch fabric.
This will not give you as good of a fit, but the seam you be moved.

KaeporaGaebora3 In reply to Valdrein [2014-02-18 18:34:36 +0000 UTC]

?_? Dart manipulation.... sounds scary. I was thinking maybe having the seams on the sides of the boots instead? Like how would I draw those out? Thanks for replying btw.

Valdrein In reply to KaeporaGaebora3 [2014-02-22 18:42:37 +0000 UTC]

The side seams won't work because you need a seam going thru the curve of the boot. Which is the front ankle.
The easiest way to see what you can do is to take a boot and drape fabric on it ^^'
Then you will be able to see what you can and can't do with the seams.

This is why I did a centre front seam X'D
If gives you the best fit and will work on any type and size of shoe so everyone can it!
Also if you top stitch the seam is not very visible. (why I added that too ;D)

Hmm. Thanks for the suggestions then! The boots will be the next thing I make (as soon as I finish making the body belt/harness xD) so I'm gonna need this tutorial!

This is great!! I was so scared of buying the shoes online and i couldnt find them in stores!

I have some questions tho:

does the heel of ur boot stick out of the 'slip'?

and how much leather did you buy?

Valdrein In reply to cutiexxpanda126 [2014-02-10 02:14:22 +0000 UTC]

Thank you :'D

Yes it does,
I find it helps keep the cover in place and gives you better grip when walking.

I bought 1M and had a lot left over, 1/2 would probably do.

About how much all together did this cost you? I mean with just the materials you used?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Valdrein In reply to Jazzyannemarie [2014-01-21 02:01:00 +0000 UTC]

About $15 I believe.
But that depends on the fabric available to you. So you can't really goby that.

jellyfur In reply to ??? [2014-01-14 01:09:08 +0000 UTC]

Thanks so much for this tutorial!  I just wanted to ask though... Is it possible to use flats? I have knee high boots, but they've got buckles. Would those be okay to use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Valdrein In reply to jellyfur [2014-01-15 19:58:35 +0000 UTC]

The buckles will show through the fabric and make the covers look bumpy.
Using flats is tricky,
the covers will be more likely to fall down your legs so you will need to make them pretty tight out of a fairly stretchy material.
It will also be harder to cut out as tracing your leg is not very easy :'D

jellyfur In reply to Valdrein [2014-01-17 20:39:30 +0000 UTC]

Eep. Leg tracing... does sound kind of hard. Ah, well, maybe there'll be some boot sales now that it's mid-winter.

Thanks!

KappaOodobi In reply to jellyfur [2014-04-15 19:37:41 +0000 UTC]

Don't know if it's too late, but there is a way to make a pattern based on your own leg measurements by wrapping your leg in plastic wrap, covering that in masking tape, and cutting it off of your leg and then you have the form of your leg in a pattern made of tape!

KappaOodobi In reply to ??? [2014-01-03 20:58:32 +0000 UTC]

How did you make the heel of the boot? It's hard to see in the picture, but is it just stretched over the heel or did you use the vinyl there as well?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Valdrein In reply to KappaOodobi [2014-01-08 17:33:28 +0000 UTC]

The heel you see is from the black boots that I covered.
The vinyl toe only covers the flat of boot and the rest is left open to let the boot heel stick out.

I've found that when the whole boot is covered you slip a lot, haha!

Like wow. I can't-- This is amazing

One question though

Does this work with short boots? Because I don't think I have money to get the materials and get new boots.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Valdrein In reply to Kittygirl62 [2014-01-08 15:32:08 +0000 UTC]

As long as they are tight boots it will work. Just avoid boots/shoes that are loose around your leg since the will show thru the fabric ^^

i ended up using this tutorial (to an extent) to make mine and omg im so proud of myself! I didnt do topstitching though because i think it looks better without it.

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Valdrein In reply to ilovehammys [2014-01-18 05:22:33 +0000 UTC]

Its preference,
without the top stitching the fabric will bulge along the seam if you use leather/pleather (thin fabric, not as much)
Also, real Leather boots are top stitched so it can look more 'realistic',
mine were mistaken a few times for store bought boots ^^

RPingCupcakes [2013-12-08 23:05:46 +0000 UTC]

This is really helpful because I can never find any boots that look even close. Do you think it's possible to attach the cover to some detached boot soles rather than wear them over your original boots?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Valdrein In reply to RPingCupcakes [2013-12-16 21:48:22 +0000 UTC]

My concern would be that the toe would be to floppy without a shoe support.
I've used them over flats and ankle boots no problem,
but I suggest having a shoe that has at least the toes covered.

You used seam allowance, right? xD

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Valdrein In reply to Cult-Clueless [2013-12-16 21:54:04 +0000 UTC]

When tracing you need to take into account the bulk of your object, the mark of your tracing tool, as well as the body of the pen/marker.
So you should be able to eyeball it.

I only add proper seam allowance when I draft my patterns or am doing panel work.
Not for tracing work ^^

Question! How much fabric did you have to use for this?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Valdrein In reply to VendettaCode [2013-11-23 20:18:18 +0000 UTC]

Depends on the width of your fabric and where the stretch is.
Find which direction has the most stretch and count for boots wide.

I bought 1/2 a meter for my boots and I had some left over.

My friend and I were wondering how you sewed the vinyl toe piece to the bottom of the boot cover. What kind of stitch did you use?

👍: 0 ⏩: 1

Valdrein In reply to hakuna-makara [2013-11-19 05:13:47 +0000 UTC]

I used a tight straight stitch since the vinyl has no stretch I didn't have to worry about it pulling.
