Description Doing 50

it read, the speed
at which thought comes
rushing in to fill the empty spaces.
But above, another which seemed
to shout black letters—

DID  YOU
   ?
FORGET

—It made me think
of things I had forgotten:

Remember

the sound of the gurgling
stream, and the whispering
leaves in the woods at the bottom
of the street. I used to walk
among the trees
from time to time,
searching for meanings
invisible to my eyes.

Remember

the sea salt in my nose,
the wet sand stuck between my toes
as I waded in the shallows,
blood freezing with every
unnatural sensation:
imagining snapping crabs,
stinging jellies, sea-sickening things
which lurked just below.

Remember

an old pup’s throaty bark,
the tap-tap-tapping
of his padded feet,
the clickety-click
of his nails on the floorboards
of the kitchen as he
ambled about searching
for scattered crumbs—
sounds I never thought I’d miss.

Remember

screaming in the hallway
outside, fists pounding
the walls next door,
the trembling in the floor
when feet stomped,
and the way the house
shook when it was startled
by the front door
slamming, a sound I tried
to ignore.

There were always
things I could never push away,
things that were left behind
in the bliss of time,
yet now brought back
to hover before my eyes, all
because of a sign

on the road
above the speed limit,
which in the end was
forgotten, too, along with the rest
of my memory, left
in the dust of a car doing
50 on an empty highway.
