Struggling for survival was a way of life for Sokoro and Njeri ever since their birth in Kenya. Enduring threats such as starvation, gangs and so on brought nothing but pain and loss for the panther twins and their family; their parents having died when the two were barley teenagers. Despite all their scourging and fighting, Sokoro and Njeri stayed together, never leaving each other's side for fear of loosing the other.

Years later, as the two hid from police for stealing, the two came across a shaman devoted to the "old magics" of the world. He sense in them a "deep bond and deeper power" he could unlock thanks to a pair of a talismans he presented to them both. Initially skeptical, the two dismissed his claims while taking the trinkets with the intent to sell them for more cash for food. However they soon discovered the man's predictions were not just words as they displayed grand new abilities. Njeri could make herself and other objects/people invisible while creating protective bubbles out of thin air. Sokoro could project a spirit of his "inner darkness", a ghost-like being with great strength, speed and was practically untouchable. (His body left behind and vulnerable during this time.)

When the two searched for the shaman again there was no trace of him, the twins realizing they had been granted an incredible gift that could be used for good....but would also benefit their own needs far better. Seeking new hunting grounds Sokoro and Njeri traveled across the seas, taking the names of "The Ghost and the Darkness", based on a tale of lion warriors from Tsavo who hunted and killed foreigners that tried to build a railroad through their lands. They would still fight for their survival and stay together as they promised since they were children, but with their new gifts they would be stronger and far deadlier than ever before.
