I'm sure that Undertale is the first fandom I've joined "on time", usually I discover a series when it's already existed for a year or 2 and its fandom has calmed down. I am always late.There also aren't many things I like till the point I can't stop thinking about it. I already had my first nightmare about Mettaton. This insanity might rival my devotion to Ed, Edd n Eddy. Much gud.
This is a 10 dollar game, people.

I am unfortunately scared of playing UndertaleΒ . Why? Because I can't stand the fact that so many people would think you're truly a bad person if you play the Genocide run or the normal run. WHY THE HELL WOULD PEOPLE TAKE A GAME THAT SERIOUSLY!?!? Do not get me wrong Undertale is a really great game, but I find that people take the game way too seriously.

It's a deconstruction of RPG-logic. It gives you the realistic implications of grinding for levels and makes you question why everyone has to die in other games, or how much of the death may have been needless if you had any other option. Everyone will start on the neutral route, in which case the very end of the game tells you what you've really been doing all this time (good or bad), because you pretty much can't get into the genocide run without knowing about it.
As for the people in the fandom, it's probably because the ones you happened to find saw it as that one would have to be deliberately cruel to want to kill the monsters in the game when it easily supplies you with the method of playing nonviolently. That, and with its story, people grow to empathize with the characters easily, so to murder them would be terrible. They like that happy ending, and the game even rewards the player with a better ending in the pacifist run. Those particular people can't distance themselves from the fact one can perform it differently for their own experience. Though amusingly, even Flowey comments on the completionist mindset of playing it differently to "see what would happen", and says one would still have to be sick and twisted to get to the point of killing everyone.
TL;DR, the game thrives on viewing the characters and story in a realistic light, and gives you an out to be nonviolent, so players take it more seriously. Getting the choice to be pacifist in an RPG in this form is also a very new concept.

Well the game pretty much does seriously punish you if you go the genocide route. You're supposed to be taking the narrative seriously! It goes meta in that way-- almost like a critique on the JRPG genre.
So yeah, that's probably why. Doesn't mean people need to act like jerks over it but, you're supposed to take the narrative seriously.Β

It's easy to make a "mistake" first time playing and end up in a neutral run, and the game loudly disagrees with you when you decide to kill everyone; so it's obvious that the genocide run is not something you can do by mistake, and it mainly exists to give players an eery "what if" to explore. Having that said, I don't know any genocide players that started it by accident or played it for any other reason but to see what it's about. Not much reason to get upset over.
But lets be honest, games that include player choice always get harsh reactions when the Youtube gamer doesn't do something exactly the way the viewer would do it. I believe even Flowey made a comment regarding this in the game itself.

The bad ending matches its name, you're playing a whole different story. And you'll never be able to get the real good ending after finishing the genocide run.
