In a soft voice, he spoke words she didn’t understand—that is, she heard them, heard something about summer (without realizing it was a name). In that close proximity, she heard his breath shudder. “…Why do you keep saying you don’t need help,” she murmured to herself, her good hand reaching out to cradle his face. She remembered the time she said he was such a child. Maybe she wasn’t wrong. When she saw him unresponsive, she reached her hand out further, sighing.

“Shh, it’s just a bad dream,” she whispered softly, tenderly, and while she was frustrated how things turned out that night, her touch was gingerly as she traced the outline of his face. If he struggled now, all she had to do was explain how this happened, but right now, she couldn’t help but calm the man who seemed more like a boy in this state.
