I finally found some time to paint something. It's not a dragon, but I used your hints to color it...actually, to paint it all, because it was the first time I did it for real. And although it's not perfect, I'm really proud of this

Thanks again for your help

good contrast on the figure, but it needs a bg to stay in!!! :0

I didn't have patience to this... Can you take a look at this one? [link] I think it looks a lot better and it has a bg

YOu should practice giving the right volume (dark and light) to your shapes

MonikaZagrobelna In reply to vandervals [2011-07-18 14:54:02 +0000 UTC]
I'm not sure what the right volume should look like

shadows and highlights in the correct place and so on

could you tell me what's wrong with this picture then? I can't see any bigger mistakes... Maybe it's too shiny, but I don't find it really wrong.

-the shadow in the floor is not strong enough.
-there is no border line for the back light.
-there is too much contrast on the dragon for a back light.
-the highlighs are too strong for a back light.

the things you're talking about come from one main reason - I didn't mean it to have a bg, it was supposed to be just a dragon. Now I've been working on some new pic, I'd be grateful if you took a look at this too when it's done. I hope this time I don't make the mistakes you're talking about

doesn't have anything to do with having or not a bg, you should have gave it a front difuse light to fit the dragon

eh, I feel so silly now I paint/draw intuitively, puting the shadows/light where I find it natural, nobody ever taught me how to do it. I think I'll have to check he rest of yours tutorials and follow them

I was going to inform you about using reflection not reflex, but then I saw a few other people have told you already.
That said, I really liked this tutorial, especially the part about the bouncing light.
Thank you for the tutorial

Holy crap. I just spent a whole school semester learning color theory and this was one of the most important aspects of composition (atmosphere) and we just glanced over it in class. Thank you a HEAP for this tutorial.
