Golden rule to follow, 1 to 1 ratio. For every one cup of rice, you add one cup of water.

I make porridge all the time. If you make rice, you have to use the same amount but 1 cup more than the rice.
(E.g. 3 cups of rice = 4 cups of water)
This only applies on some rice. (There are different types of rice out there. My favorite is Japanese rice where I use them for making Rice bowls.)
