Profile:
The woman known as Paige is one of the Shaiteine, a group of powerful beings tasked with overseeing the world and its inhabitants. She is called Paige the Variable, because in contrast to her fellow Shaiteine, Paige openly intervenes in affairs of the world, and her presence has been thought of either as a blessing... or a curse.
Before becoming one of the Shaiteine over a thousand years before, the young girl Paige was a student in the Royal Academy. In her thirst for knowledge, she opened a forbidden tome which flooded her mind with the knowledge of All Creation. The overload almost killed the young girl, and the Masters of the Academy thought it best to seal the child in The Void, where not only could her life be saved, but also that the knowledge she gained could not be used to endanger the world.
Paige would be dormant for hundreds of years, as her mind slowly grasped the truth of All. It was then that the Shaiteine found her, and appointed the girl to become The Variable.
Paige awoke and strove to free herself. She transformed her prison into a nexus connected to the outside world, which she refers to as her Home. She inscribed her knowledge into numerous volumes in the great library she created. She fashioned a Wand of purest crystal to use for her magic, and she created a key that would allow her to leave and return to her Home at will.
Turning the key in the lock, Paige opened the door, and stepped out into the world...
Abilities
As the Variable, Paige has an almost infinite well of knowledge to draw from. She knows the names of gods and spirits, and every sacred word of magic ever uttered. Being a Shaiteine, Paige is immortal, and cannot be injured. Her otherworldly nature grants her almost miraculous abilities. She can walk on water and atop of snow as if she had no weight. She can balance on the most precarious of surfaces without fear of falling.
Paige's wand is the concentrated manifestation of her magical abilities. She can cast almost any spell without an incantation, and even has the power to create and summon golems to aid her.
Paige's key, disguised as a mundane key, can open any door that has not been quad-sealed (protected from physical, magical, psychic or spiritual manipulation). When properly charged, Paige can use it to open a door that leads into her Home. From her Home, Paige can then open the door and have it lead to any number of locations of her choosing.
Weaknesses
Though much like a demigod, Paige is still irrevocably human. The vast knowledge at her disposal is limited by her human brain. Much of the time, the information she needs only returns to her like a long forgotten memory. Because of this, her spell arsenal, though formidable, still makes use of the most basic of spells. Transportation using the Key has limits. Once a door is linked to Home, it remains that way indefinitely so long as Paige uses the same door to enter and exit. If the door is destroyed, she will need to charge the Key to open another.
Having become immortal, Paige lacks any real sense of danger, and instead finds fascination at the kinds of situations she encounters. Needless to say, this does not bode well for her companions from time to time.
