Unfortunately, this was Wade when he was thirteen. Because he was quiet and seemed alienated from the other kids, people picked on him and drug him in fights that he would rather not participate in. They seemed to all thrive off of the fact that Wade may not start fights, but he will do everything in his power to finish them. He will not get pushed around. So the people around him would bet and see if they could win against him or not. Sometimes he won, sometimes he didn't. But Wade started feeling sickly like an animal. His foster mother was not much help at all either.But despite all the bad things that happened to Wade and that he had no friends (hadn't met Sheard yet) he found fun in the most simplest of things. Yes, he realizes that chalk is for kids, but what's the point in growing up anyway? Even with all the ugly and the graffiti surrounding him, a cat and a peice of rock can make him smile.
The figure walking up to him is his foster mother, showing that I guess, all good things come to an end. But that doesn't mean Wade has to stop appreciating them.

This only solidifies my favouritism in Wade.
Even before I read that the woman was his foster mother, that who I liked to think it was. She was shaded because, indeed, it ended.
The chalk is white like his innocense. The cat is grey like the mediocre surroundings, covered in grafitti and other filth. But his smile it what gets me the most. That smile that seems to last through the ages as one always to be remembered. A smile of a child simply having fun at no one's expense... at no one's pain and suffering. He lives on through those fights, always coming back to pick up his innocense; his chalk.

I love how Wade looks so innocent and satisfied here, in these sad, desolate, ugly surroundings, with the silhouette of his not-so-great foster mother approaching him from behind. The composition is great, the coloring is wonderful, and his expression is so adorable! The pose has been pulled off perfectly so far as I can tell, and the cat is very cute, too! (the picture and the real thing)
The description is very heartwarming, and it's amazing that such innocence can still live in such a terrible environment. Definitely a +fave.

I don't feel sorry for him. Nothing is worse than feeling like you're being pitied. Nothing. Even to quiet, alienated people who seem to have no pride at all. I can relate to this, in a way. I'm sure almost everyone can. He doesn't need a hug. He'll turn out all right, since he's able to be happy with simple pleasures like these. When he's old enough to escape from the bad things in life, he'll be able to do a lot with himself. True losers (the kind that don't go anywhere in life, not the kind that are picked on) start fights, he doesn't. He's a wonderful person. So all you pity-people, save your hugs for the fight-starters, what Wade needs is respect. *nod*
xD sorry for my mental-babblings, I do that sometimes when I feel "inspired"...I dun actually know anything about Wade (so my rants are probably even more senseless and random than they sound when I read them) or your other characters; I just happened to come across this picture and I loved the artwork and the idea and the description (and not-so-much the pityish-comments x_x) so I decided to throw in my two cents. Or three. Or ten. Whatever. This is amazing, I'm going to have to look at some of your other art...

Wow... cool stuff. You know, I just watched Fantasia 2000 for a school project, and this reminds me of "Rhapsody in Blue", especially because of the background.

It's been said, but you do good color work.
What I like about this piece is how I can sort of feel all the little details, you know? I mean, I can imagine the softness of the cat's fur, the pain of the cuts, the grittiness of the chalk, the creepiness of the sidewalk. You convey a lot through a few simple images.
