Description
Cooperative Individualism, also referred to as Co Indiv, is a culturally left wing, economically right wing ideology dedicated to creating a society in which the needs of the one outweigh the needs of the many. It is currently popular in Universe C-17, and is practiced by a group of nations known as Free Interest Enterprise, and is one of two major ideologies contending for power in that universe.
Cooperative Individualism can best be described as a hyber individualist, Objectivist, free market philosophy that seeks to create a society in which everyone has property that they own, take care of, and call home. Those with this property are allowed to expand it, so long as they can either buy land from a neighboring property or take it for themselves if no one else has taken claim to it. Cooperative Individualism believes that if this is done for the entire world, humanity will enter a golden age, as individuals will all be able to pursue their own lifestyle, while living peacefully with their neighbors. In theory, totally free markets and almost no laws regarding what is and is not property should do the trick, in practice, it makes life for the poor a living hell.
In most Cooperative Individualist nations, slavery is not only common practice, but actually encouraged, as it provides a small labor force for the owner of a property that they can use to keep their property safe and up and running. Depending on the property, slavery can vary from place to place, with wage slavery being one of the more common forms of the practice. However, due to the ideological beliefs of the various followers, hereditary and forceful slavery are not allowed, as they belive that every man is a free man until he has sold out.
Landowning is one of the most important parts of Cooperative Individualism, as the act of owning land to make your own is vital for the story of creating a utopia. There are three main types of land ownership throughout the Cooperative Individualist world, these main three are:
1, Singular rich individuals who own the land entirely, and have complete control over its resources, land, and value.
2, Families or cooperative groups that work together to make more wealth for themselves by merging their various properties together.
3, Corporations that have assets spread out across the land, such as railways, offshore oil rigs, and banks where property owners can store large sums of wealth for long periods of time.
The properties in question can vary depending on the wealth of the landowners or the type of landowner. Rich individuals mostly buy amounts of land similar in size to a small country, giving this individual ownership of small towns, farmland, or any other resources nearby. Cooperative groups may form territories as large as states, and corporations own vast amounts of land if they have train tracks that go from one place to the next. So long as the person or group can afford it either in the short or long run, the limit is their dreams.
Cities are a unique place in the Cooperative Individualist world, as these vast strips of land are mostly the domains of corporations or particularly wealthy people who seek to create an economic paradise for themselves. Cities will often be shared by these two groups and allow smaller business owners and investors to live there, as hospitals, fire stations, and the police need someone to pay them to do their job. Currently, the most wealthy city is New Holland, where New York City would be in our world, and is one of the most expensive cities to live in all the Co Indiv world.
When it comes to militaries, they are also privatized and eerily similar to the PMC Megacorps of Universe D-2. Depending on the country, the military can be made up of multiple PMC groups that are cheap and unreliant or entirely owned by a Megacorp that charges high prices for use of its highly trained services. These PMCs and Megacorps usually have alliances with factories and ammunition companies in order to supply their troops, and will often work for other countries as a way to make money for their employees.
Now then, onto the countries that employ this ideology and act as its representatives on this world's stage. Although “nation” may not be the correct term, as these groups are more like massive alliances of individual properties, corporations, and jointly administered territories.
The first of these “nations” is the Associated Territories of Columbia, which stretches from Oregonall the way to Florida. Made up of potentially thousands of individual properties, the Association is mostly made up of rich individuals and cooperative groups, while corporations own vast stretches of land but are generally unfavorable in the eyes of the local administrative councils.
The Incorporated Cooperative of Mexico is very similar to Columbia, but is highly reliant on corporations and cooperative groups in order to keep things up and running.
The Vereniging of Sudafrika is a rising star on the Cooperative Individualist and global stage, as it is entirely made up of Megacorps and corporations which rule a stretch of land from Cape Town to the lower Congo. Thanks to the fact that it is ruled by corporations, its economy is highly powerful and surprisingly regulated in order to keep the wealth flowing.
In southern China, a series of small resource colonies are controlled by a group of lobbyists from each of the major corporations, and some of the worst places to live in due to their blatant disregard for human life and the local environment.
All of these organizations talk and make deals with one another thanks to the Free Interest Enterprise, a massive alliance that has representatives for every single property owned across the Co Indiv world. With no official headquarters, meetings are usually either held in massive stadiums quickly built on vast stretches of land, or sometimes in cyberspace over a massive online meeting. The Enterprise is forbidden from interfering in any Co Indiv property, but can make suggestions to act as a judge and jury in court cases.
For the time being, the Free Interest Enterprise and those who govern it seem to still hold massive sways of power and wealth over their enemies, and many here at the facility are placing bets on if they will collapse within the following three years ever since a economic downturn recently occured. That and the power of their enemies, the Directarians, has only grown more powerful. Time will tell if the Enterprise will be able to keep checking in, or have to check out.
