Description
The Atlanta that I arrived in is quite a shock to me, having seen so many versions of the same city. I was expecting a city with some skyscrapers and a couple of large neighborhoods, but I was incredibly surprised. Rather than find a somewhat decent city, I was met by a Solarpunk paradise, where colossal trees shot into the sky, and every building had several large gardens and plants emerging from them. The orange and Yellow flag of the Confederacy flies high over the city, and I soon take a horse drawn carriage into this city’s heart.
“I thought Horse drawn carriages were illegal in North America, why does Atlanta still use them?” I asked the driver.
“The horses are well cared for and well fed, they get plenty of rest and their wellbeing is a major responsibility for humans, they’re citizens you know. God intended us to live in harmony with his creations, and that is what we will do until the end of days my friend.”
We stop at a small church, where large patches of moss grow all over its wooden exterior. Inside, I am greeted by Father Paul, who sits in one of the many seats, looking at a glass painting of Jesus standing alongside farmers and animals. I sit down next to him, introduce myself, and we get started.
“Christ was a man who’s message and vision for a better tomorrow was corrupted by the forces of greed and industry, causing much suffering for both people and animals alike. That is what the Distributionist Confederacy seeks to amend, we will make our own Garden of Eden, right here in the American South.”
The origins of the Confederacy begin in 1840, in which Europe was struck with a massive conflict fought between Austria and France resulting in a refugee crisis, as Europeans tried to escape the fighting by heading overseas to North America. The American north suffered as shiploads of nobles, commoners, and opportunistic criminals sought to escape the madness and make a living in America.
“The country entered a brief but devastating crisis, as the people of Europe outrun the beast of war and caused America to gain a population boom! The northern skies filled with smog, and the harbors filled with human waste and trash. The south wasn’t spared either, as the slave owners took to hiring commoners to do their bidding, causing a rift between those who supported the satanic act of slavery and those who turned to a form of wage slavery. Truly awful.”
It all boiled down to the American Collapse, an event caused by multiple factors including the election of Jefferson Davis, and the Northern secession led by Industrialist Abraham Lincoln. After that, both the newly created Free Republics and the now crumbling United States fell into absolute chaos. The north became the playthings of cults and city states, while the south gave rise to the Distributionist cause.
“Distributionist thought was very popular among the farmers and escaped slaves at the time, as they saw it being the only path towards cooperation. And so, the states and counties of the south joined together, and liberated as much as they could of the American South from the forces of slavery and industry. Now look at us! Even after so many years ago, we hold a territory that goes from Arkansa all the way to South Carolina! Although we did lose Florida to the so-called Transhumanist Capitalists.”
As the years went by and the 20th century moved onwards, a new movement began to circulate across the Confederacy, all starting with a single book. Father Paul pulls a copy of the book out from his robes and hands it to me. It is soft, and the large letters on the front are colored gold.
“Eco Distributism and the New Garden of Eden.” It says.
“The book was an instant hit, and a fascinating read that echoed throughout the entirety of Confederate society. It made the case that a Distributionist society could only survive if all of God’s creations could operate together as a functional unit, as a farmer relied on animals for the most part in order to allow his city to survive.”
“So, how did it exactly plan on changing Distributionist society in order to fulfill this vision?”
“Co Operatives would now have animals as fellow members of the group, as the animals were responsible for producing eggs, milk, meat and so on. What this meant is that a considerable amount of resources would go to making the local environment pleasing to them, as that way they could give more in an environment they were comfortable in. Studies back then showed that cows in a great big green pasture produced more than those poor things trapped in tiny pens.”
“Another great change was the role of government in this new society, as Distributists prided themselves on living a free society based upon local community and family. Now, the family and local community are responsible for the well being of the land, with the local government checking in on them to make sure everything is alright. If they need help, the government will send aid for a small price, such as raising that family's taxes for a few weeks and so on.”
“The last major change was that the more corporatist groups were purged from our society, as shown in most northern states, the more conservative nations tended to destroy their local environments for farming and land, seeing themselves as above nature itself. But we see nature and man as two parts of the same coin created by god, and so we’ve adopted several progressive policies in order to attract more citizens, as well as turn most of our country into small national parks, some of the most well known in the world in fact!”
“One last question I have is the rumor of the “Rebirth Schools” located deep within the swamplands in the south, what do you have to say on the matter?”
The holy man goes silent, and his smile turns into a frown.
“Oh, I’ve heard of them alright, and I can’t stand the idea of such places existing. OUr founders wanted to create a christian society that followed the original path of Christ, the one of love and understanding and loving thy neighbor. And yet, there are still those who have butchered the ways of the lord in order to raise their children to hate us. I can’t stand it honestly, but I know they will disappear in due time, whether it be God's will or ours is the only question in the way.”
AFter my talk with the man of god, I take a train ride all the way to Los Angeles, a city ruled over by the Amerarussians, and a rich paradise that has recently begun an initiative to make the city homeless free with a housing initiative. It was at one of these construction sites where I met Miguel Sanchez, a former citizen of the Confederacy who immigrated to this city for reasons that I desire to learn. We stand around at the center of one of these hollow structures, and we talk about life in the Confederacy.
“It was good, but behind the mask that is all that religious harmony bullshit, it was a life that was hard to live. First of all, because animals can’t directly speak or communicate with people, government officials are sent to represent the animals. What this does is that you have the government directly voicing its concerns and ideas to the common folk, something the Distributionists said was going to be swept away when they took over all those years ago.”
“What about the government creating national parks?”
“Private resources for the government to utilize for their own ends, whenever you visit there during tourist seasons, it seems all peaceful and quiet, lots of animals. But during the winter seasons, it's a free game so long as they cover their tracks. I learned about this because I was assigned to a resource extraction team, mostly made up of outside contractors, but there were quite a few of us citizens in it.”
“And the Rebirth Schools.”
“Independant like they say, but heavily influenced by the government and use the laws to their advantage. I had a friend who was forced to go to one of them once as a kid, and he wrote down everything in a journal he sold to an independent news agency in Britain. Apparently, they are hated by the government, but because they have a family owned business on site that makes money. Not only that, with each school having a small farm, government officials work on the area and get bribed.”
. . .
Not my best work, as I am focusing my energy on other projects.
