Description
This amazing redesign was made by reddit user VladMaverickIn his own words:
"Normally, people tend to misunderstand the meaning of colors of the Brazilian flag. It's normal (and wrong) to say that the green is for the forest and the yellow for the gold and/or riches. That's not where the colors of the flag came from."
"The green has its origins from more than two thousand years ago. According to old tales, the lusitanes used a white flag with a green dragon (something like this ). This was the inspiration for the portgueses, later on. When the imperial flag of Brazil was made, they chose the color to symbolize the House of Bragança ."
"The yellow started to be used in 1250, in the Coat of Arms of Portugal. It was the color of the castles they conquered. It's also reference to the Reign of Castela, that Portugal belonged through many years. For Brazil it was a reference the House of Lorena, who used the symbol from the Imperial Family of Austria."
"Aside form these two main colors, there's still the center of the flag. In the Imperial flag, excluding the leafs of cofee and tobaco and also excluding the crown, the other symbols were a blue ring with white stars, the armillar sphere and the Cross of the Order of Christ ) (aka, the Last Crusaders). On the republican flag, all of this was trade for a "simple" blue sphere with stars, representing the constellations according to the sky (and with one star for every state), and a white curved stripe with the saying "Order and Progress", quoted directly from Auguste Comte and his Positivism philosophy (L'amour pour principe et l'ordre pour base; le progrès pour but)."
"The republicans ignore the historical value on the flag and remove all the elements of the center. They were not only trying to "rewrite" the flag, but the nation as well (considering the Brazil had become a dictatorship by their hands). They not only removed the crown and leafs (which were understandable), but also the armillar sphere and the cross (the cross were the most import symbol, since it was our first flag). The republicans (that had nothing to do with USA republicans, by the way) alleged that the removal of the cross was to make the flag more neutral, while hypocritically adding the "order and progress" to the flag, that was not only bias but also related to a branch of their own church. Positivism basically died not long after, showing how pathetic it was to use the motto on the flag, which is supposed to "last forever"."
"Anyway, some citizens today would like to replace the center of the flag. Not to go back for the imperial, heavy populated symbol, but at least to trade the positivism influence for the historical cross from the Order of Christ. I did make a flag like that before , which is what I'm basing to do this one now."
