The morning of the third day was a difficult one. The dressage last night went deep into the night, and with taking care of everything after it, Orion got to bed quite late. And so, waking up this early was a struggle and he got to Mage´s stall like a ghost. At least Mage looked fresh and excited.
It was finally time for cross country, their beloved. There was nothing quite like galloping through an open field. And so, by the time they got to the starting line, even Orion was fully awake and buzzing with anticipation. Mage stood patiently, head held high. Other horses would prance around, but not him. Nothing could phase Mage when he was set on a task.
Off they went, flying above the ground. Every time Mage spotted the upcoming obstacle, he razor focused on it and flew over it. Galloping down a winding forest path proved no issue for him as well. Without aid, he knew where to slow down and where to speed up, each foot secure.
They reached the bay and the jumps in the water. From the tracks on the sand, many horses before panicked and tossed their riders into the waves. Mage held no such insecurities. The water slowed him down a little, but not enough to cause trouble. On the other side, they raced toward the finish at even greater speed.
They arrived sweaty and breathless, but happy. That was the best ride they ever had. And so, the third day was a success as well. Orion patted Mage on the neck and promised him a full bucket of treats.
The team remained for the rest of the event, taking it as a holiday. Two years were such a long pause. Orion hasn´t even realized how deeply he missed competing until it was over. But now nothing held them from joining more events in the future.
