Description
As usual with Toad I just started modeling the character with no real goal as to what they would be doing in the end. I guess the very loose theme here is that Toad is aging or sick and is contemplating eating one of his own for a chance at "another life", eh? eh? I mean the one thing I did want to get across is a Toad that was not so cheery and maybe a little realistic looking.Somewhere in the thought process I had to make Mushroom Kingdom branded footwear. If nothing else it was good practice with UV mapping.
Made in 3dsmax8( I should upgrade) and vray and photoshop.
Lots of textures were made possible by imageafter.com
Oh and if you're wondering why he only has 4 fingers instead of 5 it's because I used this tutorial and was too lazy to add a 5th digit, so sue me!

awesome work, never used vray its meant to rock.. btw i do all my toons with 3ingers 1 thumb..easier to rig and most disney stuff always had the same..!

Vray seemed more easy to work with than mental ray. Though it seems MR is more popular. I didn't realize all of disney(pixar) character's had 3 fingers, now I feel less lazy hehe

think i added a watch, awesome work u have there.! most games characters the really toony ones have three fingers. But i guess the more serious ones have four fingers and a thumb.!? But im inspired by tom and jerry , the mask and roger rabbit etc.! but when i went to ghibli museum in Japan i felt way lazy..almost not worthy to call myself a cartoonist.!

I get the feeling that Toad is feeling useless. He's a loyal vassal of the princess, yet the day is always saved by Mario. He looks upon the mushrooms and wonders if, with their influence, he too could be a hero.

An interesting theme you've come up with here. I really do wonder what Toads think of having to use mushrooms in a situation like this. Could it be like turning against your own kind or just making use of the resources you've been blessed with? We'll probably never know for sure, but it's kinda interesting...
Anyways, while it's a little different, I kinda like the gloomy and beat-up look of Toad here. It's not exactly something that is seen everyday from those guys, and in this case, it's nice to see. I think the textures came out nicely, too. It makes me wonder what it is that Toads really call their 'shorts', though. Last, but not least, kudos for adding a touch to the shoes. Can never have too much Mario-related branding, even in a Mario related piece.
Toad doesn't get enough love these days, so I have to give you credit for pulling this off. Great work.

Hmm maybe the Toad people aren't even mushrooms at all. Maybe all they do is eat and kill mushrooms and make nice hats out of them.
When I was about to start texturing his pants I thought to myself, "Wait what are these even?" Diapers? Shorts? Who knows!

One of my ideas was that he was depressed because mario moved on or was dead and there wasn't anything going on in the Mush Kingdom.
