To live in a functioning society, the people living in it need to value each other’s personal agency. That is the case for most people, but Astrid Felli is a glaring outlier. Being raised in the capitol’s school of magic, Astrid had an air of arrogance that has been building since the days of her youth. Pushy and assertive, many people were at her whims depending on her mood at the time. Be it stealing the lunch of her colleagues or copying the work of one of her more meek peers, most of the time if Astrid had a thought or desire, she seized it. All and all, the mage was a menace and everyone around her knew that.

The red-haired mage was of average height and well above average weight. With sloth and gluttony being two of her dominant character traits, she has ballooned considerably over the years. Challenging her however would be a simple task if it wasn’t for her tremendous magical prowess, with her skills and power rivaling many of the teachers. When not spending her free time eating or sleeping one of her hobbies was simply being rude towards those who she knew couldn’t push back. Astrid the bully was truly living her best life at the expense of many people around her. Finally fed up with her behavior, the faculty of her university congregated and brainstormed about what to do about the unruly mage’s behavior.

This congregation consisted of the school’s headmaster, two professors and three students who met up in one of the lecture halls to air out their grievances. With everyone sitting down at one of the tables, one of the seniors spoke up with an idea.

“Can’t we just send her off on some sort of mission for a couple of months? I’m pretty sure she could use the extra credit.”

Another one of the students sighed. “Well, I guess that’s an option, but that doesn’t solve her behavioral problem…”

One of the teachers rose his hand to call attention to himself. “I might have an idea. There’s an alumnus who set up a small library a couple cities over, they have a fairly unwavering personality and I just know if anyone was to knock her down a peg, it’ll be him. His name is… ah what was it…”

There was a moment of silence before the teacher clapped his hands together. “Ballantine! Yes, that was it. He and his partner would make for decent mentors, they have a couple other employees so hopefully it’ll be a valid learning experience for Astrid.”

“Then it’s settled. Astrid Felli will be sent away for the summer, hopefully this will be fruitful for everyone.”

———————————————

Three days have passed since the private meeting and Astrid was already out of the university and on her way towards the small village of Halcaster where the library she was supposed to work at resided. The cramped horse drawn carriage slowly made its way down a gravel road before the horse stopped for a small rest. The slow ride was almost agonizingly boring for the mage as she knocked at the door to get the driver’s attention.

“Hey you there! What’s the holdup?” The annoyance in her voice caused the driver to sigh in frustration.

“So sorry ma’am, but Percy here isn’t used to carrying around such… um, heavy cargo…”

There was a beat of silence before Astrid chuckled. “Did you just call me fat?!”

“Well, I’m certainly not saying that you’ve been the best passenger I’ve had.”

“What gives you the right to insult me? You know what, I’m getting off this stupid carriage. Don’t expect your payment either, I’m out of here!”

Astrid slammed open the door and squeezed her fat body out and promptly walked off, leaving the driver feeling a mix of anger and confusion, but ultimately a feeling of relief knowing that the ride back home will be a relatively peaceful one.

As Astrid waddled down the road, the mistake she just realized she made became apparent to her. “Crap, I forgot to ask the driver which way Halcaster is…”

After an hour and a half of hiking on the gravel pathway, the out of shape and exhausted mage was quietly cursing the university and the library she was supposed to stay at. What gives them the right to wrong a prodigy like her? With her feet aching and the sun beginning to set, the mistake she made was starting to come back to bite her. “I need to get off of my feet… there must be a rest stop nearby, or a map or something…”

Momentarily stopping to lean against a tree to catch her breath, Astrid noticed a light coming from off the beaten path. The sight was a welcome one as she briefly mentally weighed her options “Oh good, there’s a building over there. I’ll just stop by and ask for directions.” Astrid then deviated from the path and walked deeper into the woods before coming across a small wooden cottage with a small flower garden out front. As she approached the door to knock, she saw a note taped to the door.

[I’m sorry to miss you but I’m out in Halcaster for a drink with friends. I’ll be back in a couple of hours. -M]

“You’ve got to be kidding me! What am I supposed to do now?!”

Astrid turned her back towards the door and leaned up against it to ease some of the pressure from her feet when an idea came to her. Before she left for her trip she remembered reading about a particular incantation of one of the assignments she copied, a lock-picking spell. With a mischievous smile, she clapped her hands together and closed her eyes to focus. She placed her palm on the lock and focused, imagining a key before a clicking was heard from the lock. “There we go! I knew that nerd knew what she was talking about.” The mage then opened the door and squeezed herself inside.

The cottage was fairly warm with a pleasant, sweet smell coming from the kitchen. Taking a couple steps and stopping in the middle of the living room, she looked around at the various decorations and photographs hanging on the walls. As she walked around examining the various expensive and mystical looking trinkets, her mind began to wander. “Does a witch live here or something?” It was then she accidentally kicked something hard and heavy. Trying her best to keep herself from swearing, she looked down and saw a dumbbell resting next to a yoga mat. Upon closer inspection she realized that the room was full of various pieces of exercise equipment. “No, not a witch, probably some sort of solder or something…”

Astrid made her way to an armchair and plopped down to finally give her feet some rest before a yawn came to her. Deep down she knew she was making a mistake breaking into a stranger’s home, but any apprehensions melted away when she remembered that not many people stood a chance against her magic. Taking a glance out the window, her stomach suddenly began to growl, the pleasant smell that was present when she broke in was intriguing the mage. She slowly got to her feet and waddled to the kitchen were sitting on the counter was a pumpkin pie that was seemingly cooling. The mage smiled as she came in for a closer look. “I doubt whoever lives here would mind if I had a little bite…”

Ten minutes passed and the empty pie tin clanged against the countertop as Astrid gave her doughy belly a satisfied pat. Any sense of apprehension about her actions left her mind as she decided to look around for another snack. “Just one more bite and then I’ll leave.” She opened the cupboard and grabbed a cookie jar and began scarfing down the baked goods. It was then her eyes wandered over to the icebox… and then the pantry door… common sense isn’t always a correlation with natural mental prowess as demonstrated with the gluttonous mage.

Meanwhile a tall and thicker woman in an ornate orange robe walked alone in the dark away from the pleasant warm glow of the village streetlights. Meredith Cadel hummed a small tune to herself as she was reminiscing about the fun she had with her friends at the local pub. In her mind a couple drinks were the perfect way to cap off a somewhat busy week. As she made her way down the gravel path towards her cottage, she had a sudden faint feeling of fear wash over her. Something was different… She pulled out her key and placed it in the lock only to realize that it wasn’t even locked to begin with. “Strange… I must have forgotten to lock it before going out…” Meredith slowly opened the door and stepped inside only to be greeted by trash strewn across the floor and a very fat woman laying on her back sound asleep in the middle of the mess.

“What the hell?! Who are you? What are you doing in my home?!”

Astrid grunted quietly in her sleep before Meredith walked up and nudged her side with the tip of her shoe. “Hey, wake up, I need some answers!”

Astrid slowly opened her eyes and yawned before focusing on the angry woman standing over her. “Oh…”

Meredith reached out her hand and pulled Astrid to her feet before crossing her arms in frustration. “So, do you just break into every home you come across? And that pie was for my sister, what were you thinking?”

Astrid sighed as she began walking towards the door. “I don’t have to be lectured by some hag. I’m out of here.”

“…Hag…? Young lady you have no idea who you’re dealing with.” Meredith adjusted her glasses as she decided what to do with the intruder.

The older mage then walked behind Astrid and placed her hand on her shoulder. Stopping in her tracks, Astrid felt a strange sensation flowing through her body. “Wait, you’re a mage? What’s with all this gym equipment? And what did you do to me?!”

“Well can’t a woman my age have a couple hobbies? Besides I think you’re a bit out of your league anyway, dear.”

The older mage then shed her robes to reveal a trim and muscular physique. The sight of her six pack in contrast to Astrid’s toneless belly was as apparent as night and day. With a slight air of nervousness in her voice, Astrid stammered out an apology.

“Listen ma’am, I’m sorry for breaking into your house and eating your food. I’ll be on my way now if you don’t mind.”

Meredith chuckled. “My, now you have manners. Don’t you know it’s getting late? Why don’t you stick around for a little bit?”

With a wave from her finger, the front door closed and locked as Astrid felt a feeling of dread wash over her, unaware that her body was subtly changing.

“I-I told you I’m sorry. Why don’t you let me out and we won’t have to see each other ever again. I need to go to the Roaming Library anyway, some scholar is expecting me…”

“The Roaming Library you say? Small world, my sister is one of the owners!” A warm smile came to her face. Well since you ate the gift I had baked for her, perhaps I could provide her with a different gift…”

Astrid took a step back before freezing. Her body couldn’t move no matter what she tried.

“You were already a fairly round mage before, so what happens now shouldn’t be too much of a change~”.

Before Astrid could say anything, her body began to morph and she slowly began to shrink down and take the form of an actual ball. With her eyes darting around looking for a way out, the haughty mage was reduced to a lowly yoga ball. Meredith smiled as she picked up the bouncy mage and gave her a good squeeze. “Who’s to say I can’t have a little fun before sending you on your way?”

Setting Astrid down, Meredith stretched before taking a seat on her new yoga ball. “This feels nice, I’ve been meaning to buy something like this for a while now.”

The witch stretched her back and adjusted herself on Astrid the yoga ball before bouncing a couple of times on her. “How are you holding up down there?”

Astrid didn’t know what to think but the humiliation of what was transpiring burned deep in her soul. She was just thankful nobody at the university could see her in this sorry state.

After stretching her back once more, the older witch began to bounce on the ball once again before-

**POP!!**

Meredith fell on her padded butt, slightly stunned by what happened.

“Oh dear, I think I overdid it a little… poor thing.”

Meredith picked up the shards of her new yoga ball and placed them in a small jar. “Don’t worry, I’ll be right back.”

A brief three minutes have passed and the mage returned to the jar, now holding a milky starry looking purple liquid. She poured the fluid in the jar and swished it around momentarily before the liquid began to evaporate out. Moments later Astrid slowly reformed from the scraps back to her normal rounded self, only this time about the height of an apple. Astrid stood in shock and felt around her body before looking up at her captor. “I’m back… but something’s still a bit weird…”

“That’s right, and I’d like to apologize for being a little rough. I’ll go ahead and take you to my sister in the morning, I’m sure she knows how to get you back to your normal height.”

Meredith carried the jar over to the table and sat it down after handing Astrid an almond as the miniature fat mage stood in a confused daze.

“Just think of this as a little learning lesson. Next time think before you break into someone’s home~”.
