Description

(Written by the Writer Cosmic)

Ah, Yggdrasil, the great World Tree. Truly, there’s no better introduction to the 374th Reality than the cosmic construct it sits upon, don’t you think?

Despite its name, appearance, and the legends surrounding it, Yggdrasil is no ordinary plant. In fact, it is not a plant at all, but rather a construct of pure intrinsic energy that holds together our entire world. Some argue that Yggdrasil's very existence is what allows the rest of Creation to flourish. Its roots are firmly sown into The Foundation and its branches extend freely throughout all of the Nine Realms, anchoring them to reality and facilitating travel between them. Yggdrasil itself belongs to no one realm, existing instead in the mysterious World Between.

The Nine Realms of Yggdrasil

Earth, the Material Plane
Notable Residents: Humans
The material plane accounts for what we may recognize as the known universe, including planets, stars, and galaxies. In the beginning, it was born from the seed of Yggdrasil, blossoming into that which now connects all other realms. It is known colloquially as Earth and is the only plane that can freely interact with all others.

Heaven, the Supernal Plane
Notable Residents: Angels
A realm both fueled by and composed of supernal essence, Heaven is the birthplace of the angelic choirs and the focal point of the Almighty’s kingdom. It was originally built by the archangel Samael during the Divine Days as his family’s homestead but has since expanded into a great city of silver and marble.

Hell, The Infernal Plane
Notable Residents: Demons
Originally, the plane we now understand as Hell was the Infernal Expanse, an ephemeral realm of fire and brimstone inhabited by primeval beasts. It was later united under the banner of Lucifer after his failed rebellion. Under his rule, Hell has flourished into an impressive empire ruled by devils and demons alike.

Elysium, the Ephemeral Plane
Notable Residents: Daemons
Elysium is a vast expanse that contains hundreds of independent realms, bound together only by the winding branches of Yggdrasil. It is the homeland of daemons and other eldritch spirits, containing the heavenly realms that have made their way into mortal mythology and folklore. Notable lands of Elysium include Asgard, Tian, Takamagahara, and Arcadia.

Limbo, the Umbral Plane
Notable Residents: Ghosts
Limbo, sometimes called the Underlands, is a grey, ghostly realm where all mortal souls rest after they die. Sometimes considered the chthonic mirror of Elysium, it is not one unified realm, but dozens of independent domains held together by chthonic chains. Souls who arrive in Limbo are judged by the system of beliefs they followed most closely in life, and are given either paradise or punishment accordingly.

Elsewhen, the Astral Plane
Notable Residents: Miscellaneous Spirits

Elsewhen, also known as the Dream Lands, began as an elemental force connecting all mortal thought and emotion. It soon evolved into a physical space fueled by eldritch essence, but also contains pockets of infernal and supernal energy throughout. Most mortal beings visit Elsewhen in their sleep, but few creatures choose to call it home.

Coventry, the Fantastical Plane
Notable Residents: Grimm
Coventry began as a simple offshoot of Elsewhen, an ephemeral expanse built to house the unique essence created by the telling of stories. As mankind evolved, their tales grew larger and more complex, causing Coventry to expand into a plane all its own. It is home to many strange and fantastical creatures, including the Grimm, beings we would recognize as fairy tale characters and folkloric heroes.

Avalon, the Vernal Plane
Notable Residents: Fae
The vernal plane is a place place rich with magic and lush wildlife. It was originally left uninhabited, save for scattered tribes of nature spirits, until the Morningstar Rebellion when angelic refugees sought it out as a new home. With time and interbreeding, the plane (christened Alfheimr or Avalon by its people) became the homeland of the first fae.

The Elemental Plane
The keen-eyed among you may have noticed that the map of Yggdrasil includes only eight realms, yet there are Nine named in the lore of old. The “Ninth Realm” is in fact not a realm at all, as it has no physical space. Rather, the so-called Ninth Realm comprises the essence fields of The Bleed; the primordial energy that connects all life and elemental forces in the known universe.
