hahahah
I don't think it's ABSOLUTE trash, but my coloring skills are really poor and it's harder to practice than drawing. I just don't know how to 'unflatten' things.. or how to create ambiences with colors, that kinda thing =/ it limits the results I can achieve with a lineart I'm happy with.
zomg, an opponent!

It just takes time. Really, it all comes down to color choices an how you use them. I can't say much because I have coloring issues too... :\ The way you color reminds me of , so maybe try looking through her stuff for inspiration?

lol, saying 'it all comes down to color choices an how you use them' is like telling someone who can't draw 'it all comes down to straight and curved lines and how you use them'

damn, I wish I was half as good as that. You can easily point out my weaknesses from that example, like the shading is solid (I have a lot of trouble finding out where all the shadows go, so naturally I never do any kind of bold shading), the intensity of the lineart varies, even blending in with the fill colors in some parts (that's more of a style choice, it's something I'd probably do if I was using a tablet. I wouldn't say it's the 'right' way to do things, but it can add a lot to a picture depending on the type of coloring. Plus it's just attractive IMO). One thing that I can't stand is how I never seem to be able to smudge correctly. Maybe it's the tool, I don't know what I do wrong but everytime I use it it comes out all blurry and nasty looking. I really wanna find out how to do sharp strokes like that (you can clearly see what I'm talking about, guy's right arm (his right). I could give you a million other examples within dA.). Another thing that is fairly simple to do without a tablet (that I was going to but forgot) is to paint over the lineart to make it the same tones as the colors inside, only darker.

You can be, dammit:
Just takes time and practice.
Have you tried setting the smudge tool's pressure to 68%? That's what I do... >.> Depends on style, too... Some people like really smooth renderings... I prefer rough renderings, so I tend to aim for that. I also use a hard brush for smudging rather than a soft one to get sharper strokes. Even still, I'm better at cel-shading.
Lol, I'm not good at painting right on top of line art... I tend to color beneath it, so that way I can always fix the opacity or color of the line art to my liking afterwards.

68? is it.. magic?
I don't know, I've probably already tried that. And all types of brushes as well.
Oh I meant coloring the lineart itself, like (I think it's how people usually do it) making a new layer on top of the lineart layer, setting it to multiply and brushing over it with the colors you want.
